Apparently he was a bully when he was younger, and it cost him his shot (for now) with the Boston Bruins: https://www.npr.org/2022/11/07/11347619 ... t-bullying |

Bully is an inadequate word to describe how shitty this kid was. |

That is a horrible story. Quote: In this locker room, we're all about inclusion, diversity, respect," Bergeron said. "We expect guys to wear this jersey to be high-character people with integrity and respect. That's how they should be acting." Uh does he know Marchand is on the team? |

He was drafted by the Coyotes in 20 and they immediately had to cut him when this came out. The Bruins have known about him and his past for 2 years now and just decided to sign him the other day. Many of their players were very vocal about their disdain for the signing and now they have apparently terminated the contract. He is a piece of shit but this is on them for signing him with full knowledge of his past. |

I was going to say something about the fairness of continuing to punish someone for something they did as a young child, but I kept reading. Yikes! I have no sympathy for a kid who did those things to a disabled child. |

Hopefully he can learn to code if he’s allowed to attend college . |

Who thought this was a good idea and who signed off on it? |

Mark Wahlberg once cleansed himself of racially assaulting and blinding an elderly Vietnamese man by doing some sort of vague charity work after he became a celeb. Idk, maybe he coached youth football or taught airline passengers how to stop the next 9/11. Point being, Boston and its people have a lot of leeway for bad behavior if you show the slightest bit of contrition, however non-responsive it may be. |

Knowing what he had to lose, he should have been at the disabled kid's door apologizing the day after the issue was resolved in court. He gives zero fucks. |

They don't care about Asians but he has other stuff like that from his youth. I think he's pretty Jesusy now too. He does quite a bit of Charity stuff which most seem well rated and is one of those people that has good fan stories. Maybe he really did turn it around. For some reason I really love the city of Boston. I hate their sports teams and am lukewarm on their people in a way but I love everything else about it. I haven't been a ton of places but I feel a connection to it, like I should have lived there or something. |

I'm not against second chances. Michael Vick was involved in dog-killing organized crime. Dany Heatley got drunk and killed a guy. This kid just has no remorse whatsoever and could have displayed it at numerous junctures. I don't even understand why the league let Boston sign him in the first place. |

Most people are willing to forgive a drunk driver because most people have driven drunk. Most people are not willing to forgive a person who tricked a disabled kid into eating a piss soaked popsicle because most people haven’t tricked a disabled person into eating a piss soaked popsicle. If the Mike Vick situation happened now he’d never played again. People these days have taken liking doggos to previously untold heights. |

I think MANY people are willing to forgive a child for doing things they've never done. Sometimes, you read a story or watch a video, and you just "know" that a child is irredeemable. Like that boy who beat the shit out of a girl to steal her shoes a few years ago. |

man of few opinions wrote: Nobody is irredeemable. Truth. I think this tests the limits of a lot of peoples hard held beliefs about people, justice and their expectations of people on their team. I don't know why the NHL would take a hard headed approach rather than trying to be the broker of that restorative justice that everyone involved seems to want. First step is for that player to learn compassion. Maybe he doesn't have the capacity, in which case he will be a much bigger problem to society in the future. I think its at least worth exploring. On a more macro issued, it seems very important to the reporter that race is detailed, when it is clear the issue is almost entirely about abusing an incompetent person. |

First step should have been a straightforward & direct apology to the kid/family. |

Post subject: | Re: Bruins yank contract of player who bullied Black classma |
A true apology can't be mandated out of his desire to play hockey. He has had a long time where, if he was truly sorry, he could have already made amends and be taking the ice for the Bruins. That said I have no doubt that whatever he did (and I didn't read the article, only what was posted here) is certainly not beyond redemption. I really hope he can make this right in some way some day. I did some shitty things as a kid I regret and in a few instances have been able to make it right over the years and it feels good. |
