I think my limits are too low. How much insurance do you guys carry? Do you have an umbrella policy?

I did, but couldn't get insurance anymore.

I'm talking about home, auto, etc.

for auto the big one is your UM/UIM coverage. Make sure you get a solid 500k on that for a limit. Too often I see people settling for 25k in UM or at most 100k.

Here is the issue. Let's say you have 100k in UIM. You get t-boned by someone running a red light with a shit 25k policy. You have serious injuries that require some hospitalization and missed time from work. Your Group policy pays for your medical, but now they have a lien for what they paid. The way UIM works is that the UIM only covers the amounts not covered by the other driver's liability. So if they have 25k in liability and you have 100k in UIM you can collect 25k from them, but only 75k from your 100k UIM policy. And you still have to pay back your Group provider for their medical lien. And you have to pay your attorney 1/3 of the 100k. When it's all said and done there won't be much left in the pot for you. Always get a massive UM/UIM policy, especially with the number of uninsured drivers on the roads these days.

I'm at 300k for that. I'll up that to 500k.

good move. The cost is very little and the protection it gives you can be immense.

Yes to umbrella. And with the umbrella they tell you what your car limit minimums have to be (at least mine does).

To keep rates lower I carry higher deductibles. Not gonna file a claim for a broken window or a bent gutter.
