Can we get a still shot of what I just saw on TV? Omfg this dude can't even swallow or blink his eyes. Y'all are going straight to hell. This is a person that obviously has suffered either a TBI, or is in the end stages of a terminal disease. If you ever get the chance to encounter someone in this state you will realize there is a human in there who is a shell of their former selves, buy you will get small glimpses of who they are, of course most would run away from these folks, those of us that work in fields providing support to these folks and almost more importantly, providing support to their families look upon the people that do not understand their conditions with a great deal of disdain and contempt as those types of people make already challenging existences even more challenging. |

When I start feeling sorry for myself and my physical limitations and struggles, I try to recall some of the folks who get treated by the VA hospital and clinics and the great support that most of the caregivers give them. You realize how lucky you are that you missed out on stuff like they have to undergo. |

It's in the little moments where you see humanity, will never forget doing a life preserving chemo treatment on a lady that was vented, she could not talk, but reached and grabbed my hand and looked me in the eye with a look of thanks, there is still a person in there with a brain that is trying to exist in a world with unimaginable challenges. |

Honestly, this really is a reminder that life can turn in a second and that tomorrow is promised to no one. We are all a second or two away from a random accident or a stroke that leads to a TBI, you never come back from that, as I tell many of my Ortho traumas, we can fix you injuries, you may never reach your full level you did prior to the injury, but a brain injury we cannot fix. Now I have had some incredibly difficult conversations with young guys that just found out they will never walk again, and that's tough, you just need to let them vent and have the providers talk to them about Shirley Ryan or another spinal rehab specialty center, but they will still have the ability to communicate, if you suffer a TBI or reach the end stages of a terminal disease, that is taken away from you. |
