Got into a conversation about the shitty cars we've owned and I realized I had a 1986 sunbird that was rated at 86 horsepower. It was so bad I couldn't really have the ac on while going up an expressway on ramp and expect to be at speed anywhere near the top.

94 Dodge Shadow. 100hp.

Once pushed it over 100mph on 290 and the thing shook like it was falling apart.

You remember that Dodge Shadow commercial? "Me... and my shaaaaaaadow, strolling down the aaaaaaaavenue!" and there's a white and a black dodge shadow drifting thru the salt flats looking like actual sports cars? Not much reality there eh?

I had an 86 Ford Escort for awhile. Think it was around 86hp.

I don’t. I owned it around 2002/3, long after it was discontinued. Can’t imagine anybody mistaking my 2door shadow for a sports car.

The thing was designed to subvert aerodynamics.

We owned one hybrid. We called it a go-kart because you had to floor it to get on the highway and it made a sound that didn't really sound like an engine but more like a long "Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh".

But, it let us use the carpool lane with one person in the car and that made it worth it.

1995 Jeep Wrangler had about 125. Ton of fun to drive around town but a bear on the open highway at 70 mph, especially when windy.

A 63hp 1996 ford aspire. Manual, power nothing. No power steering, handled like a go cart. Car was so small, I could unlock the passenger seat without leaning over.

Yet somehow, with the seats folded down I fit a full sized foosball table in the back.

No idea what the horsepower was, but my first new car out of college was a Chevy Cavalier. 0 to 60 in about 5 minutes.

If you type in the model of the car, guesstimate the year and type "horsepower", the computer/phone will give you the answer. The interwebs is quite a thing.

I had an '83 Monte Carlo with what I think was a 265 cubic inch V-8 engine. It only put out 110 hp. The front seat was a bench. It was destroyed by that Shell Station on Rte 72 near Woodfield where you used to get a free car wash with tank fill up. The brush fell off while I was in the car wash, and it acted like a can opener down the passenger side of my car. Prom night too.

It is still crazy to think how when I was a young kid I would sit in the middle seat in the front of a car but at least I was wearing a seat belt and now I would get the police called on me if someone saw my kid in the backseat without a booster.

first car I had was an inherited 85 or so Chevy Celebrity Eurosport wagon. Google tells me it topped out at 125 and it had decent power when the service engine soon light wasn't on which, was rarely. That light on, felt like it was running on 3 cylinders instead of 6. Mechanics looked and looked and never could figure it out. Oh well, it got me to school. Had to replace the engine in 93/94 (Warranted at least), still happened. Can't say I miss that car.

The same thing existed in those station wagons where kids would sit in the way back part. Of course the front is more dangerous.....

The standard when I was a kid was the Ford Taurus station wagon with a third row seat that faced backwards.

It's crazy how just about every modern four cylinder engine puts out more horsepower than a 40 year old V8.

I think about that all the time. I had an 84 Camera with a 305 that put out about 175. My Audi S4 was a six cylinder putting out 333, and my current ride (queue humbleboy) is an F Pace SVR with 550 and gets up to 60 in under four seconds as an SUV.

A late 80's Hyundai Excel with a whopping 68 hp carbureted engine. It maxed out at 45 mph going up the mountains of PA.
