Is there a bigger grift in sports than the Olympics? World Cup is probably a close second. |

Or at least, it used to be. The soccer leagues overseas are probably up there to a degree, just because of the money floating around there unregulated. |

I don't give a shit about the Olympic games. But corruption stories amuse me endlessly. |

I'm looking at going to France for vacation about a month after the Olympics end. There should be some very good deals, not just in Paris but also some of the smaller cities an hour or two away by TGV. |

Could you imagine the enrichment of the Daleys had Chicago won its bid a few years ago? |

good dolphin wrote: Could you imagine the enrichment of the Daleys had Chicago won its bid a few years ago? I had been leading the conversation between my former employer and the city about logistics for goods movement, truck routes, etc. for a potential Olympic Village. We weren't under contract yet obviously, but it was clear that there was so much that hadn't even been thought about that every major A&E and planning and forecasting firm with a Chicago office was going to be overwhelmed with work if they had been selected. An example: a senior city civil servant said that the Eisenhower would be closed to truck traffic east of 294 to create express bus access, and that trucks would be prohibited on all roads within (I think it was) 5 miles of the Olympic Village and the Loop except for midnight-5am. For proportions, Wrigley Field is 4.9 miles from State & Madison. When one of my colleagues asked how all of the restaurants in River North would get perishable food deliveries, I was met with a blank stare. Losing the Olympic bid was the best thing for the city, but it probably cost me $200k worth of bonuses. But think about all the guys who would have gotten paid to plug in things. |
