0.99 repeating indicates that it's infinity close to 1. But is infinity close the same as equality?
One argument is that, for example, over vast distances, say when calculating galactic or universal sized distances, that the difference between .99 repeating and 1 could be light years.
Another argument is that a pie sliced into thirds proves that if each slice of pie represents 33.333% of a pie, and you have three slices of that lie then you have 99.999% of a pie when you put them together. But is that true? Really you have one pie.
Anyway, is 1 equal to 0.99 repeating?

Yes.

x=0.9999....
10x=9.999...
10x-x =9.99...-0.999...
9x=9
×=1
0.999...=x=1

You assume X is cancellable.
Maybe it is. I don't know.

maybe, but 99 still has to report in as eligible or it's a 5 yard penalty

I hadn't considered that.

I had a friend try to prove to me that 1 + 1 does not equal 2, by getting me to agree to the following propositions:

1 = .99999

1 + 1= 2

and then springing

.99999 + .99999 does not equal 2 on me.

It was at the end of a very long night of drinking. I think I told him to fuck off and then went to bed.

A well measured response.

Why would you agree that .99999 is = 1?

For practical purposes it is. See the opening post of the thread.

Check your vocab book, Ike. I think you have confused the definition of infinity with infinitesimal.

But if unintelligent tradesman Darkside says yes, then its most certainly no.

Yet if the Grand Poohbah of the great CSFMB says that 1 = Justin Fields jersey number and 0.999999 = a Hall of Famer, than the two would be equal in nature?

Just asking a question.

Darkside has .99 problems but equality isn't 1
