Emergence started yesterday in Villa Park. There are easily seven billion of these things in my yard. It's gonna get really loud and really stinky soon. At least the dog gets some snacks out of it.

Nothing (yet) here in Arlington Heights. Not surprising, since we didn't have any the last time, either. MANY have bagged their little tender trees and shrubs. I hope I am wrong (I like cicadas) but guessing they wasted their money.

Our outbreak started about three weeks ago, now the "transformer about to explode" noise is gone. My neighborhood was built up at the same time as the last breed date, so we don't have many on our block as most of them ended up buried under houses and driveways. I find one or two dead ones on my driveway each day, I suspect that my gutters are full of them from the two old trees which rise above the house.

Theyre kind of cool in a novelty way but once they start screaming en masse everyone wishes they were dead.

So was mine. I wonder if that's why I haven't seen any?

I haven't seen much biking around Maple Lake and the Little Red Schoolhouse but I took a walk today around the Prairie Trail off Lagrange just south of Orland and HOLY HELL- they were everywhere and their sound was extremely loud in places. There were areas where small trees were absolutely covered. I thought it was pretty cool but they freaked out my walking partner.

These things are fantastic. The noise they make somehow eases tinnitus. I hate bugs, but these things are chill. I wish they'd come out every year.

"Cicadas are at their most tender just out of the shell. The tough exoskeleton is not very tasty," he said in a post for the university. "Watch them climb up a tree and begin to molt from their outer shell. When they're out of their shell, gently grab the soft bodies, blanch them in boiling water for one minute, then put them into a zip-lock bag and place them in the freezer before preparing them to cook."

Quote:
Borgerson said cooking with them is relatively easy. "You can add them to any of your favorite dishes," she said. "They don't need peeling or extensive prepping, just pan fry them or parboil and toast them in the oven, and then use them like you would any of their crustacean relatives."

This is the worst Willa Cather's novel ever

my dogs must've eaten 10,000 of them in the past few days. Our neighborhood feels like Cicada Ground Zero.

OTE is going to have to white board how he got from Chet's post to Wila Cather. In a related story, I just picked up Shadows on the Rock. Knock on wood, it will be a more entertaining read than this thread.

We let our cat go to town about a week ago. He enjoyed himself and then spent an entire day vomiting. We had to close the smorgasbord at that point.

Trump’s running mate: yeah I shot a dog

Analysis: people love dogs…dumb

DeathSantis’ running mate: cat is annoying, kill the cat

Analysis: sheer administrative competence (which I understand nobody cares about)
