2024 has been a really hard year as I've watched one of my best friends go through major health challenges that stemmed from a long-term illness he's had since he was young. He's about 2 years older than me with two kids. I have no idea how he and his family are able to keep it together, but they've been much stronger than I could ever be. Because he's immunity system is compromised, I can't see him for months, maybe longer. He can't talk or text much either. I miss my friend and I'm not sure what to do other than offer up occasional texts for his wife to read to him. Its the first close friend I've ever had go through this. Fuck, this sucks.

Sorry to hear it Hoffy. Have you tried arguing about Caleb Williams to get your mind off it?

Have you thought about using Dan Bernstein's discount code to sign up for telehealth services at Betterhelp.com? If your insurance doesn't cover it, you know what to do.

It’s kind of a sick flex in this forum - of all places - to brag about having a friend.

Have you considered executing a businessman to distract yourself?

Also very sorry to hear that for all involved. Health is everything but the silver lining is having people in your life is the only thing that outranks health, so hopefully your friend (and you) can find comfort that so many people care about him.

That sucks. Yeah this has been an unusually long and shitty year.

And that’s beside Cajun Rice disappearing. AGAIN.

Sorry to hear, Hoffy. Hopefully there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Texting his wife your thoughts isn't the best but it would probably help more than it would hurt. Maybe don't worry about doing it too often, her bringing any kind of joy to him via texts from friends might benefit them both.

Keep offering up texts to his wife for her to read to him.

That's more helpful than you can even fathom.

Just to let them know you are thinking of them is rather important. That can change a down day into a good day.

Sorry to hear, that's a tough situation. Been a difficult stretch where I work of late. A co-workers husband passed unexpectedly at 49 of a heart attack right before Thanksgiving, they have a 4 year old daughter. That was a tough wake to attend. Found out last weekend an ex boss of mine who is still with the company just died at 53 and his high school aged kids found him. Wake this weekend. Ugh...

Am reminded daily that tomorrow is promised to no one.

Seems the only reason this board exists is to provide a sandbox where we can share our bad takes on things which provides a momentary escape from the harsh realities of life.
