This should be a good topic since traditionally there is nothing the Board enjoys discussing more than the Board itself.

No matter who has been in charge of moderating the Board- bigfan, Seacrest, Brick, me, it doesn't matter- there have always been malcontents who complain about the way it's done. Sometimes it leads to the creation of new boards (Curious Hair is not invited!) or a diaspora to Reddit and Secret Facebook Chats.

Why is it that the same people who act as if bigfan or Seacrest broke into their homes, raped their wives, and murdered their children simply because they deleted a post are so accepting of the heavy moderation on Reddit and Facebook, etc.?

Is it because that moderation is done by all-powerful sky Gods like Mark Zuckerberg's minions or expert Redditors rather than by some guy who just bought you a drink at a remote?

Best theory I can give you is that in the early days of this board, there was zero, and I mean zero, moderation of this board: before I was here you could post anonymously without registration, which usually went exactly how you'd think it would. But even after that, bigfan was very hands-off for a long time until one day he wasn't, and I think there still must be some expectation that a board this small and conducive to in-person meetups should have no oversight at all, as if it's a bar that we can lock up for the night ourselves on our way out. No one would ever think to apply that standard to Reddit or Facebook.

That's great until some asshole goes over the top with stuff that is so offensive to the community that MANY are howling about it. Then someone has to make the call. There are some fine lines and it's not easy. That's why we decided to add a bunch of guys we thought would be reasonable to do it. Unfortunately, that resulted in Furious Styles leaving the board. I just didn't think- and I believe Brick agreed with me- that Caller Bob had done anything to deserve a banning. I have to tip my cap to KDdidit. He and I disagree about plenty of stuff, but I'd trust him more than most people I know.

You saw what happened when IMU had moderator power for a minute. He immediately abused it because you were "too negative" as the Cubs were attempting to blow the World Series.

I had to leave the Chat because it was like Discord on speed. Way way too much…and too little.

I believe it is all of the political bullshit, there was none of that when I first came on and since it has been instituted is when all of this other has happened.

Maybe it's a sunk cost fallacy, but I don't think anyone here actively wants the board to suck. I'd trade CB to get FS back every day of the week, but that wasn't in the cards. My usual concern is to not lose "good" posters to "bad" ones. Someone comes in, posts like a dipshit, someone good leaves, and then the dipshit stops posting anyway so what was the point? It's not like there's a good answer though, oh well.

To be clear, it's not my expectation. There's been stuff I'd zap here if I could. And for whatever issues I have had, I haven't quit in a huff and started my own board (I missed my window to start Giant Pile of Salt Industries long, long ago).

I get that. And I agree. But my thought is that you can't just bounce every guy who says shit you don't like. I still question myself about killing Baby Mac. But my patience there was long and he followed me around the board like an asshole as well as pissing off MANY others. I would have even continued to put up with that save for the fact that I saw him posting in the Facebook Chat and he was completely well-mannered and not an asshole at all. So why is he acting like a douche on the board I'm running while showing respect to Mark Zuckerberg? And if Caller Bob had done to Furious what Baby did to me, I would have supported banning him.

Places that moderate because of tone and not content are the absolute worst and pointless. I got IP banned from the Score twitch chat for the crime of saying Kevin Durant has actual talent while Nick Wright huffs his own farts for a living after those two got in some dumb social media tiff.

I never had a problem with BigFan's moderation of this board and by all accounts neither did MANY others if you go by the rate of attrition since he decided to bounce. As much as some people shit on the guy, they never left. I have my idea as to why MANY have decided to leave from here. Could be wrong and could be right but who knows for sure.

I do know that during the years when I'd scroll but rarely post it seemed that there was much more interest in the shows. Both on air content and the behind the scenes stuff. There also was interest garnered as a result of show hosts that happened to post here. Namely McNeil, Drinky, and Goff. As they faded away the interest in the shows/daily show threads waned as well and this place became mostly politically oriented.

I disagree (surprise surprise) about politics being the primary problem around here per se. If the mods were to remove the political section from this board tomorrow, this place would become even more bereft of posters than it already happens to be. Very few people post here to discuss either sports or sports radio these days. Even in daily show threads that is the case. The opposition to people such as Bernstein and Dicaro had very little to do with their views on sports. It had to do with their views on politics, culture and society as a whole. Same goes for Goff. None of that changes if everyone were to simply stop discussing politics. And even when people here claim to be "solely here to discuss sports" it is clear that their views are mostly based upon politics.

No one wants to be moderated by their peers. Sensitive people get offended easily and when it is Reddit or Facebook deleting your post you can't put a face on it.

Having thick skin goes a long way on a message board. Nothing we post is that serious and unless we are throwing personal attacks at others, shouldn't be deleted or moderated. IMO.

I think bigfan reached that point with a few posters plus the people who would fight regularly would complain to him. Maybe he just got tired of it or it drove him crazy.

A lot of people that left just had parts of their life change and the board wasn't a perfect fit for it any more. They needed an excuse so they blamed whoever was in charge. It's the same board it always was. People just have different lives now and they'd rather spend time on things other than here.

A board that was based on local sports teams that suck and also on AM radio has diminished in popularity right along with its two biggest draws.

As evidenced by the Bernstein firing, they will come back if there is something to discuss.

Some had made in person friendships. Others found it easier to jump in and out on something on facebook especially on a phone. Some had this site get blocked at work.

It's a lot better of an excuse than the fact that ToxicMasculinity was posting bad things and then he got banned and very few of them came back.

And (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) as people age their passion for their teams and fandom diminishes. It's not like I don't want the teams I root for to win, but whether they win or lose doesn't affect me like it used to 10-15 years ago.

That's a reasonable take. And yes, some of us have persecution complexes.

If it is true that people need an excuse to leave the board, they create one by blaming someone. It possibly suggests they feel guilty for leaving (because they think they are leaving their friends on a sinking ship or because they feel the often intense connections here). They may also be trying to burn the bridge in order to ensure they don't come back (due to the time commitment or something.)
