Post subject:  Who Deserves the Honors?

FYI this is here because the Cubs section does not allow a poll.

From Mariotti's online blog, regarding 5 wishes Cubs Fans have:

Quote:
2. Make Kerry Wood the star of the celebration. He was supposed to be a has-been, one more sore arm from retirement. Then, when he worked his tail off in Arizona and made a triumphant return, he was supposed to be a jinx. What Wood has been is an inspiration, loved by teammates and fans, and don't be shocked if he makes a significant postseason contribution at some point. For now, let him pop the first champagne bottle. No one deserves it more.

Ok. I like Kerry Wood. I really do. I know he really wants to make up for Game 7 NLCS '03. He's said it over and over. I bet he has worked harder than anyone. I just don't think he deserves to "pop the first cork". He's been coming in during games with decent leads, he's not starting. He has only pitched 21 innings with a 3.80 ERA (good) and 20k (outstanding). But I don't think he's the guy to pop the first cork.

I like Theriot for that honor. When you talk about him, you sound like a bad sportscaster spouting cliche after cliche (like Berman) saying "He leaves it on the field everyday, he is all hustle, he's a clutch hitter, he's a team player...", but these things, cliche as they may be, are true. He makes 400k, But has earned 20 times that. To me, he seems to play everyday like it's his last game. He earned his way onto the team, it was not given to him outright. He plays like a 12 million a year player.

So, fellow Cubs fans, I ask you, who deserves to "pop the first cork"?

You said it better than I could have. The Riot deserves it. (How'd ya get so smart, Darkside? Must be good genes  )

Ramirez. All the guy does is consistently drive in runs. Soriano and Lee have been up and down.

I agree with your sentiments on Wood, Darkside.

Theriot and Lilly aren't bad choices either. But, Ramirez has been doing it for years now for this team.

EDIT - DeRosa should be up for votes also. He's been Mr. Everything this year.

+1 (on Ramirez)

If Mariotti said it must be wrong and misinformed, so Ill go with Lilly. Hes meant the most to this team imo.

Doc, you got a point, it is hard to argue with 100 RBI.
But he was more or less expected to do that. This isn't happening without him to be sure. But, I'm not asking about an MVP, really. I'm wondering who you give that one brief moment to.

I could see Kerry Wood injuring his hand somehow while popping the cork

I went with Marmol. They are five games back without him holding leads. He's been automatic in the 6th and 7th this year.

OK, if you want to give a guy a brief but mildly significant moment like that, then I'd probably vote for Kerry Wood.

He's been through more with this organization than anybody on that team and seems to be pretty well liked. I think something like that would likely mean more to him than anybody else there.

I wonder who's leading similar poll of Yankee fans?

Wait the result are in.
The Yankees decided that the hallowed "first cork honor" will go to the first guy back in the clubhouse

Way to keep your eyes on the prize Cub fans.

I'd still say Ramirez deserves it because he has carried this team most of the way. I know he's "done his job" but there's a lot of guys that haven't lived up to what they're paid to do.

i wouldn't have a problem with wood having the honors, i just think it should go to ramirez.

A Yankee fan could never understand a Cub fan.

We keep our eyes on any and every prize that comes our way, one at a time.

Musty Bob, this is not a literal honor. It's just another way to ask, "Who da Man?" on this team. I seriously doubt that there will be someone getting the honor of popping the first cork.

Way to take it too literally. :?

So who popped the first cork for the Cubs in 2003?

In the figurative sense, I think that would have been Mr. Prior.
But that's another thread.

What about Lou. He's had his hands full with the Barrett problem, then the Koyie Hill era, then Zambrano forgetting how to pitch. He should go first. But if it's players only, then Lilly.

I've got some bad news for you, Mustang Rob. In my mind, you and your ilk are no longer the most insane fan base in baseball.

How can there possibly be an entire thread devoted to the most appropriate way to celebrate prevailing in this garbage division?

It's a World Series bet coach, so we're still both in it.
