Now that McCain has all but locked up the Republican vote. Who do you think he'll realistically select for VP?

PS. Unrelated note, the media has been pushing McCain because he was the most liberal of the republican party. Watch now as the media turns against McCain.

Is that also why Fox News has been treating him like shit? How liberal is McCain, really? He doesn't seem any more liberal than the one time self proclaimed liberal Mitt Romney. You guys act like he's Che Guevera or something, just because he's anti torture and doesn't want to rid the country of the scary brown people from the south.

He's only leans to the left on 2 or 3 issues. The main problem is that there's a track record of conservative presidents that become more liberal once they're in office. See W.Bush. The last true conservative to stick to his conservativeness through thick and thin was Regan. That's one reason why McCain tries to associate himself so closely to Reagan.

Ah, but you forget Reagan did raise taxes! And he started that whole "Just Say No" campaign that just ended up being wasteful spending. Conservatives see Reagan through rose-colored glasses, just as liberals do with JFKennedy.

Anyone who is president has to move a little more to the center than where their base is, for one reason being that they are everyone's president, not just the president of the extremists within the party. If Hilldog or Obama get elected, you would notice that they would move a little more towards the center too (Universal Health care probably won't happen, especially Hillary's whack plan).

Also see McCain on immigration, Gang of 14, global warming to name a few more.

While not "liberal" his foreign policy seems too imperialistic / globalist. This isn't really R or D, but not what I would call Conservative.

Isn't Reagan more properly classified as a military Keynesian than a true fiscal "conservative"? That is, while he reduced the tax rate from 70% to 38% for the wealthiest Americans (but slightly raised the tax rate for the lowest income bracket) during his initial term, Reagan also dramatically increased military spending, thus running substantial budget deficits (the annual budget deficit increased from $74 billion the year before he took office to $231 billion in his last year; the federal deficit increased from slightly less than $1 trillion in his first year to over $2 trillion in his last year) and forcing future presidents to contract social spending as a % of the annual budget. On financial matters at least, then, Reagan cannot be called a true conservative.

Good points bwfalcon & Angus. That's why McCain has a legitimate chance. He's definitely the most "centralist" candidate. If he just wasn't as old as Reagan he'd be real strong.

That's not necessarily a problem in my world. And there is a comparable track record of moderate and liberal presidents becoming more conservative once in office. Effective leadership and governance sometimes requires compromise. Too bad so many voters don't get it.

Ann Coulter saying she will campaign for Hillary is funny. Be careful what you wish for.

Oh, back to the poll....

Not sure what Romney or Guiliani bring to the table, so no on them.
Lieberman - a Democrat, not going to happen

I think he needs someone from the base, so no also on Powell. Powell and Rice, I think would bring foreign policy status which McCain does not need.

I have never heard of Mark Sanford, so no comment.

The only way he can take Huckabee is if he does a complete about face on immigration - not likely since this destroys his image of goign against the party and being a Maverick.

I think he needs someone strong on economics and / or social issues. Maybe a Haley Barbour? He was a Washington lobbyist 1st which means he's already got a headstart on being a corrupt crony, which is key if you want to get ahead.

My friend FavreFever,
This bodes well for those who do not like Hillary. And to be honest, Ann Coulter belongs in here with me. You do too. When you coming to visit me again, FavreFever? I miss your gentle singing to me while I sleep.

Your Friends,

Other...Governor Charlie Crist from Florida...besides the obvious effect it would have in Florida, his selection would be a good first step for McCain to kiss and make up with the conservative base.

Conservatives wanting a conservative presidential nominee from the more conservative party is, of course, illegitimate.
