This going off Coast's poll question. Im not sure people will be 100% honest here, but if they are, it could make for some good conversation. Do you have the preconceived idea that because people hold a $80,000 piece of paper they are smarter than the person who doesnt have that piece of paper? |

Interesting question Kid. In all honesty, I don't. I try and treat everyone with respect from the bagger at Jewel to the bosses at work with advanced degrees. It doesn't matter where you came from, but if I'm in contact with you, how you will help me or vice versa. |

I try not to, particularly because my job and my sisters, who never went to college, give me perspective on it. Education level tends not to have much to do with how smart someone is. I realize that there are people who are not good at college and are very smart, just like there are people who are in college who are not that smart. Plus, I try not to judge people on intelligence, you do not get a degree in being a good person. Though, maybe we should give those out. |

For me, it's not so much judging intelligence, but knowing someone's educational level does provide some preliminary info about a person. At the very least, finding out that someone didn't finish high school tells me that there was obviously some drama in that person's life, not that they're necessarily unintelligent. |

I actually used that because thats about what My sister spent for a 4 year degree from DePaul. I guess most state schools arent as expensive. |

At my work, alot of people won't talk to the facilities people because well, they don't see a reason to do that because they are less educated and will never 'need' them (or so they think). Me on the other hand will typically stop to ask them how they are doing or make small talk. One - people should be treated with respect regardless of their job or education background Two - someday you might need that person to help you with something like getting a printer cartridge in a hurry to print a presentation |

First of all, no. But even if I wanted to, how would I know somebody's education level when I meet them? Are they wearing signs or something? I'm pretty sure by the time I learn what the highest level of education a person has achieved in their life I've already made a judgement on whether or not I think they're a moron. |

I judge people on how they judge other people by education. And yeah, 80k is the going rate. I remember when I started at College of Dupage in 1992 it was $18 a credit hour and now it's $108. Jebus. |

$80k is cheap. I have five in school now and the average is $31k. Illinois is the cheapest at $20k/year. I don't judge people by their educational level. I do judge them though on how they dismiss its importance and value.

It depends on the path you take. As far as I remember Algebra, Chemistry, Calculus, and English Lit haven't changed much the past uh....forever.... So, if you want to spend 20k a year on that for the first two years of undergrad, that's cool. have at it. But for me, it will be In-State for any offspring I hope to have unless scholarships dictate otherwise. |

As in anything, you have to weigh cost vs. value. I have one getting a Business Degree at Illinois and one getting a business degree at Carnegie Mellon. They both have pretty good grades. The Illinois grad is inteviewing for jobs making $30k in year one, the CMU grad is interviewing for jobs making $55k in year one. Looks like the higher cost of education will pay off right away. |

I will tell you that starting salaries based on where you went to school matter very little in Engineering field. Now, that could very well be because math is math and the field is very Code driven. It certainly can be about where you graduated from, but why not 2 years at a Junior College for the core credits? Certainly not 20k a year. |
