way back circa 1999/2000 i was known to the internet at large as "emessiah", itself a condensed version of my old dialup BBS name "electric messiah", which was nicked from the my life with the thrill kill kult song "kooler than jesus" (a sample goes "i am the electric messiah... the ac/dc god") -- fittingly enough, the first dialup bbs i ever called was called kooler than jesus, ran by kids in high school 2 years older and 20 years cooler than me (i.e. the brains behind the board makes low-mid 6-figures out in the silicone valley, is now some sort of audi club enthuiast, and likely fucks models...) so it was kind of a fait accompli that i'd go listen to that TKK song, have my mind thusly blown, and nick a proper nickname from it.
here's one for you oldschool chicago heads, the first time i ever condensed it to emessiah was when i signed up for my first-ever e-mail address @ ripco.net/com/whatever... it was a dialup BBS that had e-mail access, and electricmessiah@ ripco.com was too long, so
emessiah@ripco.com was born, then emessiah@ juno.net was my next one...and so on and so forth.
anyways, circa 1998 i had been introduced to good/backpacker/underground rap by my friend @ UIC and aceyalone was quickly climbing up the ranks to be my favorite rapper. there's a great song called "the guidelines" on his excellent all-time-great LP "a book of human language" and in that song a certain line biew my mind --- "my architechnique sparks the dark streets of your resting grounds / i suggest you warn your town" --- architechnique seemed cool as shit, and since most of my favorite musicians (aphex twin, squarepusher, autechre, aceyalone, latyrx, blackalicious, etc) seemed to have made up names, i wanted one... so i kind of hyperfocused on that bar-or-two and most specifically the word architechnique.
i loved the word synapse... there was this oldschool cat from #vidgames synapse who was the troll of the place, but he was down with Ant, who ran a pimp little priv8 warez box on the ucla resnet so we were hooked the fuck up with every new app au gratis back in the mid-late 90s. i always wanted to nice the name.... so at first i had cynical synapse... you know, cuz i'm a cynical dude. the first permutation was "sinical synapse", with sinical being the way it is cuz it's a sin to be cynical, you know. so i had sinicalsynapse.... but then ppl would call me SS and shit, and i'm not much of a genocidal type... so i started thinking of ways i could fuse the words sinical and synapse... thinking of hooks, and then the word "apocalypse" came to mind. apocalypse had the -cal from sinical, and the -pse from synapse, and seemed to bridge the gap. so i kind of gave up on synapse and changed it to apocalypse, and did a super saiyajin fusion dance with the words sinical and apocalypse, hitching them together at the mutual "-cal-" and came up with sinicalypse.
i said it aloud: "cynical lips" and immediately started laughing... it was then and there that i decided the etymology was "sinicalypse: the sin of the cynical apocalypse... you gotta believe!"
and there you have it. to the ~4 people who braved tl;dr territory to read that, i hope it was an enlightening waste of ~30 seconds of your day.
