I don't live in Chicago, but I work here. Was kind of hoping to use the whole thing as an excuse to miss work. Nothing says "I can't make it in today" like a good old fashioned building burning/stabbing/rape/public urination fest... |

No Olympics, now no G8. Time to tear the city down and build a brand new city that can handle these events. |

Government was smart enough to realize CPD is understaffed and Ill-equipped to handle the G8. Would have been a disaster in Obama's home city. Not what is needed in an election year. |

Why move one (G8) and not the other (NATO)? So the city drops its guard and the occupy/anonymous/et all protestors show up anyhow. Half-ass move on the government's part. |

If they moved it to DC maybe, but Camp David is in the Maryland woods near the Pennsylvania border. Not a place the protestors are likely to go. Going by chatter on twitter and elsewhere, the occupy/anonymous types smell blood in the water with this retreat by Obama and want to continue with their plans to occupy/protest in Chicago in May. Keeping the NATO meeting here gives them a target and an international audience. |

conns7901 wrote: Split the protesters up? Let Rahm save face? Quite possibly, Rahm and Obama decided this had all the potential to be a disaster for both of them. The G8 was the event more likely to draw heavy protests. The NATO meeting may have some demonstrations, but not the type of stuff the G8 was probably going to bring. conns7901 wrote: Of course not. And yet, it is illegal and punishable by fifteen years in prison to record a police officer kicking the shit out of someone based on the premise that a recording might be deceiving and such recording is an invasion of the privacy of these "public servants". |

Not true - they ruled on that one and Freedom won. Not really. A friend of mine was on a the jury during the high profile case of the woman who recorded the cops who refused to take her complaint against their brother officers seriously and attempted to discourage her from pursuing it. They found in her favor due to circumstances. And there is a federal judge in a different state who tossed a similar case on a constitutional basis. But right here in Illinois Lisa Madigan is fighting tooth and nail to keep that law in force. |
