Best Buy Co. reported weak results for the fourth quarter Thursday and said it has decided to close 50 big-box stores and to cut 400 jobs in corporate and support areas.

Despite offering bigger discounts, the world's largest consumer electronics chain saw weak demand for gadgets in the holiday selling season.

Net loss was $1.7 billion, or $4.89 a share, for its fourth quarter ended March 3, compared with net income of $651 million, or $1.62 a share, a year earlier. Excluding charges, it earned $2.47 a share.

A lot of times you can get the same kind of stuff from Amazon at a cheaper price, and most of the time there is no tax plus free shipping.

CNBC did a special on Best Buy. It sounds like many people are using Best Buy for advice and a chance to view things, but proceed to buy the items from the cheapest online provider. You can use your smartphone now to scan a bar code and immediately find the cheapest offer. I don't know how they can keep he current model profitable.

 I went to Best Buy just for that about 6 months ago, for wireless routers.

I think the real problem is that Best Buy sucks.
You used to be able to go in there and buy a CD from rows and rows and rows of CD's. I went into the one nearby looking for a CD for a christmas gift and they had like a row of the Top 10's (no top 40, this was more like the B96 music rotation than anything else) and that was it. had music for download though. Now why on God's Green Earth would I need a place to go to download music for an upcharge? Just ridiculous.
Meanwhile, I am assaulted by cell phone guys and for some fucking reason they sell guitars now.
That and talking to a sales rep (HS Sophs and Jr.'s mostly) about routers was honestly suicide thoughts inducing.

I tried to go to their website yesterday and it was down for maintenance. Not sure how / if that relates...but thought it was weird. It's back up today.

I will say this about Best Buy, they had far more Blu-Ray choices than nearby Barnes & Noble...

Yeah but the Barnes & Noble by you doesn't need to carry anything else except the Encyclopedia of John Deer and The Famer's Almanac

Shocking development. I would have thought you'd have more success finding electronics at a Bookstore over an Electronics store.

I'll never forget the time about 10-12 years ago I was stopped and pulled into the security room at the Best Buy on 76th and Cicero because an employee saw me put a cord in my pocket, which was the earbud to my phone.

I was messing around and hit copy paste on the desktop of a computer like 10 times so it was filled with icons. I assume that security was watching and found me walking around the store and said that they could press charges against me for vandalizing the computers and that it's going to take hours for them to fix it. I asked him if he wanted me to go back and fix it in 5 seconds by using the delete function and save them hours of work. He said "That's not the point" so then I told him to feel free to call the cops on someone for using a computer meant to be used by your customers. He mumbled something about it not being worth it and went away.

I wasn't wearing a hoodie.

Luckily the clerk was not white-hispanic but the more rare Somoan-Hispanic.

Nope. I'm out in the middle of McHenry. Or as we like to call it, McMayberry. Our best buy sucks (Johnsburg), just like all the other best buys.

And no, I wasn't wearing a hoody, but I'm sure I may have had a Cubs hat on, so security clearly had to be Sox fans. :D

I bought a new cell phone at Best Buy a couple weeks ago. I was wearing shorts, flip flops, and a t-shirt. It was a very nice day.

Good thing you were dressed as such...

Elmhurst Steve would have spared your life.....grudgingly, but still.

I was tossed out of a Best Buy two weeks ago. All I was trying to do was put my keys in my pocket, but they dropped to the ground. Must have been Sox fans.

I was wearing a Cubs hat, polo with popped collar, sandals, and no pants.

Popped collar? Now that's something that warrants getting shot.
