Growing up on the border of Skokie and Evanston I've known more than a few Holocaust survivors. Naturally, there are less and less of them everyday. But I still see a tattoo once in awhile.

One of my neighbors on the floor of my building is an old lady named Gina. Another neighbor told me she recently broke a hip. I haven't seen her in awhile. I fear she may be dead. She is pretty old.

Anyway, she used to walk the halls with her walker and I'd get into conversations with her. One day she mentioned my "wife". I told her she was my girlfriend. She started raking me. "You no good. You just like my son. You never marry these girls. They should dump you. Why you no do the right thing? My son live with girl for twenty year. Why he no marry?" I just laughed.

Another time she said to me, "Your girl, she French, no?" I told her she was and she said, "What about you? Where you from?" I said I was proud to be an American. That wasn't good enough for her. She wanted to know, "Where your people from?" I said I was of German descent. She looked me in the eye and began pointing at the Star of David and number on her arm and said, "GERMAN!!!! You know who else was German????? HEEEEETLER!!!!!!!" I tried to extricate myself from that conversation as quickly as possible.

Anyway, I think it comes down to how it affects your family, you, those close to you. If Castro seized your property and threw your brother and uncles in prison, of course he's as bad or worse than Hitler as far as you're concerned.

It's like the difference between major and minor surgery. Major surgery is when they're operating on me. Minor surgery is when they're operating on you.

Exactly. Ask most Eastern Europeans, and they hate Russia far more than Germany for what happened during that war. Then again, when half your family has to flee and the other half gets sent to Siberia for the crime of "owning a business" you can't really blame them.

I guess that is what really gets me about Ozzie saying "I love Fidel Castro". He probably would have said "I love the Russians" during WWII also. Then again, America kind of did at that point.

As a side note, my grandmother actually was transferred back land a few years ago she "lost" to the Russians back there. She went back but she donated it back to the town for a park. According to her though, it wasn't worth that much anyways.
