Horsemen,

Does Doug O'Neill's past have you rooting for or against IHA in its quest for the Triple Crown? The whole "milkshake" controversy even had Secretariat's former owner chiming in against O'Neill.

Given it's been so long since there's been a Triple Crown winner, I'm torn as to whether I want it to happen with this horse because of the trainer. Is conjecture about cheating going to be the norm with every horse from now on, just like we wonder about inflated baseball stats?

I don't follow horse racing but aren't there going to be some decent horses that have not run either of the first two legs of the triple crown in this last race? Wouldn't that be an advantage or at least increase their odds since IHA has run twice in the past month?

why is this milkshake thing bad? isn't it just like baking soda or something? Is this a health hazard to the horse?

It's not the ingredients in the milkshake that make it illegal. It's the method. A milkshake is administered through a worming tube directly into the horse's stomach.

And this is bad how?

Right now, the only horses that they are saying have a chance are Dullahan and Union Rags, both whom ran in the Derby but skipped the Preakness. And it was just announced this morning that Alpha will not be running due to him running a temperature.

My guess (and really its just a guess) is that Paynter or Street Life are the only horses that have not run in the Derby or Preakness and may give IHA a run for the money.

It isn't very comfortable for the horse. And there have been knuckleheads who drowned horses by incorrectly putting the milkshake into the lungs instead of the stomach.

There's a lot of stuff out there worse than a milkshake, EPO for example. Bottom line, you're not supposed to be administering anything on race day except sanctioned medications under the state vet's supervision. It becomes a dance to see how close you can do your thing without catching a positive.

So Joe, are you rooting for IHA to get the Triple Crown?

It depends on his odds.

Seriously, even if I end up betting against him- which I expect to considering he is almost certain to be overbet- I won't feel awful if he beats me.

The money is going to be made in whomever beats IHA.

I see a lot of trifecta bets in my future that include IHA, Dull, and UR. With Paynter as a sleeper and Unstoppable U as a supersleeper to show.

Zetterholm netted me a few dollars last week. 8)
