Walking out of Goose Island tonight at North and Clybourn, walking 5 feet in font of us...a Coyote. No, not a Phx Coyote, not a Nas one, but a real wild coyote. On top of it, it had a tag in its ear? So they are tracking the Chicago Coyote Population? |

Based on the size and shape of the wings I'd say it's a falcon. |

*CTA El Nerd Mode On* I know it that isn't a CTA train, because for one, there are never purple seats, and two, they aren't shaped like that. And also, that train looks pretty clean. *CTA El Nerd Mode Off* |

At one time I had some storage at 3800 West 38th, saw the Coyotes always walking down the tracks from the west burbs. Our dogs often got into some fights with them. Yet that area was kinda wide open, junk yardish. But when you see a Coyote walking down the sidewalk, from the Goose Island, crossing in front of the Gap Kids, then over to the Subway??? Where did you see this tracking info? and what the fuck are they tracking? Their shopping habits? If they are going to allow a den, relocate the den or build them a den, under Chicago and Halsted, you can actually hear the rats every morning at like 6 Am over there. |

I am actually guessing that is kinda the issue. They need some predators in the city as the rodents and rabbits are inhabiting everywhere. Got rabbits at my place, where I am working, my sisters place, etc. |

Rabbit population is down here in arlington. They say the hawks are getting them! No not Kaner!!! I have seen yotes here too, when I am out running. One blew my doors off running parallel to me across front lawns while I was running in the street, kind of like I'll Have Another taking down Bodemeister. |

What I like is when a police car goes down the highway with it's siren going at night and the coyotes howl back in response. |

That's why I asked the question. My impression was that they traveled alone or in pairs and were generally solitary creatures. Obviously they have to get together and have sex some time. And then there are pups to raise. But I've never seen more than two at once. To me a pack means a group that moves together to hunt. Do they do that? |

Wikipedia/Coyote: Though coyotes have been observed to travel in large groups, they primarily hunt in pairs. Typical packs consist of six closely related adults, yearlings and young. Coyote packs are generally smaller than wolf packs, and associations between individuals are less stable,[19] thus making their social behavior more in line with that of the dingo |

Post subject: | Re: COYOTE! |
I have had single coyotes come near enough while mowing hay to have hit them with a broom handle if I wanted to, but they were probably just grabbing the mice as they ran from the mower. I believe most of their hunting is at night, and the barking makes me think there are more than one out there. I have always heard of packs taking down deer, etc., but fortunately, we have never had any issues with cows or calves! |

Not surprised they are in the burbs, I mean a yard in the burbs in more green area that my whole block has. But walking around North & Clybourn? 6 stop light intersection with US Beer Co, Goose Island, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. not exactly primo hunting grounds I suspect. |

Coyotes do run in packs for the most part, they hunt solo or in a pair often if the local game is small but when going for a deer or larger game they team up...The do not send the runt to bait the dog..they send the smartest/fastest to lure away from his property... The coyotes follow the railroad tracks ..trains that ship grain attract rodents which attracts predators. they are all over the back of the yards and have been for decades...Saw a study done a few months ago and they DNA tested Coyotes all over the country..the larger coyotes (above 50 lbs) have wolf DNA in them..the larger the yote the more Wolf DNA in it.. |
