Im sure most people have read about Daniel Tosh's incident at the Laugh Factory. Basically he was getting heckled, told the woman heckler(she may or may not have even been the heckler, depending on who you believe) "Wouldn't it be funny if five guys raped you? I mean like right now?" ..... And the Internet proceeded to blow up. I read a terribly stupid article on Huff Post by Meaghan OKeefe. She basically said its a fact that Tosh thinks the act of rape itself is funny because he said that. She also said its a fact that a large number of people agree with him that the act of raping someone is funny. Here's a sample of this Pulitzer-caliber work... Meghan O'Keefe wrote: Daniel Tosh, however, keeps things silly. He keeps the tone jocular. Tosh wants to inhabit the persona of the likable ne'er-do-well who's your coolest friend. So, when he says "rape jokes are always funny", he's not playing the part of a horrible human being who would think rape jokes are always funny -- he's showing us that the cool, likable guy at the party probably thinks rape is funny... and okay. There's nothing in his tone, writing or presentation that says, "Rape jokes are funny because jokes are funny. Rape itself is wrong." This is why the Daniel Tosh incident "crossed the line" for so many people. It's not that comics can't cross lines. Comics should say whatever they want. If Tosh honestly thinks rape is funny... well, that's his opinion. That's his worldview. What's disturbing is that this is a worldview that is violent and that lacks empathy. What's even more disturbing is that he's not some unknown comic presenting an unpopular opinion. He's one of the most popular and beloved comic acts in the country. Which means that a huge percentage of our country thinks rape jokes are funny, but not because they admire Jeselnik's wordplay or Silverman's irony or Mulaney's empathetic juxtaposition. They think rape jokes are funny because they think the act of physically hurting and sexually dominating a woman against her will is funny. And it's not. They're not laughing at a joke. They're laughing at the concept of rape. Rape is disturbing and horrible. ........... Again, Tosh wants to be liked. He wants to be popular, and so we circle back to the fact that the problem isn't Daniel Tosh. The problem is that our society is still a rape culture where a large percentage of people think that rape's OK and that a girl in a short skirt is asking for it and that it's funny to assault someone. Not for the sake of satire, but for one person's amusement over another person's real life victimization. Man there's a lot of pretentious bullshit in there. I think seriously accusing someone of condoning rape is more offensive than obviously joking that someone should rape someone else. But that's not really why I called. George Carlin famously said "I think it's the comic's job to find the line, and then intentionally cross it." I agree with that. O'Keefe clearly doesn't. What I'm wondering is where the line is for you personally? Is it different when it's a joke being told by a professional comic vs a social setting(Obviously assuming the social setting is conducive to bar humor)? What about here on the CSFMB? I think if people are honest there will be vastly different answers. We already know Don Tiny doesn't have a line. Which is awesome. Where is yours? |

I don't think anyone here gets away with saying (posting) that to any female board member....maybe to IMU though. |

Killer V wrote: I don't think anyone here gets away with saying (posting) that to any female board member....maybe to IMU though. I agree. I don't think it would be tolerated in a social setting either, any social setting really. And it wasn't funny and/or creative by Tosh. I dont really have a big problem with Tosh saying it in that situation though because he was attempting to be funny. It just didn't work. I remember board members here specifically had a problem with child rape jokes when the Sandusky case first broke, but I haven't heard as many protests since when I've seen "poor humor" attempted here though so I was just trying to gauge what topics should be off limits always here, in a bar among friends, and by a comic, in the opinions of board members. |

As for the question to the class, there should be no line for a professional comedian. But you have to know if you bomb, you're gonna get it from the masses. |

Apparently, this chick had no problem with the gay and racist jokes. That said, saying a rape comment directly to a woman is pretty dumb. |

According to her she stomped off and left immediately, feeling embarrassed and terrified(her words). According to the Laugh Factory owner she sat through the rest of the show, and didn't complain until it was over. Somebody's lying. Agreed that in pretty much any and every scenario that is a stupid and unfunny thing to say to a woman. I can't believe Tosh thought it was funny or clever. |

That was before li'l danny bernstein made child rape jokes safe by incorporating them into his hard-hitting news coverage of Penn State. |

1) Don't go see Daniel Tosh if you are worried about being offended. That's pretty simple. In fact, don't go to comedy clubs if you are worried about being offended. I've been to a fair share and virtually every time there was things said that could have and probably did offend people. 2) Don't talk during the performance. No one cares about you. If you are offended, stand up and leave, but as I said above, you'll look stupid. 3) "Rape jokes" can be funny and are prevalent all over society. In fact, you can say on national television, in a non joking manner, that you hope that someone goes to jail and gets raped and no one cares. 4) The author is an idiot. She just makes up the fact that a large percentage of people think that rape is ok(well, in prison it's alright as long as it's in some sort of punishment). It's a joke. If someone tells a joke about the positive qualities of Hitler(which the comic did when I was there) does it mean that a large percentage of people think it's ok to kill Jews? |

Ricky: So you were four and a half foot, and you put your toe up into the air four and a half feet by kicking? Karl: Yeah. But I landed on my back. Ricky: Right okay. Imagine seeing that on the playground. They go 'get Karl Pilkington to kick his height, I bet he falls over like a fucking penguin'. Karl: It wasn't in the playground, me dad got me to do it in the garden! Ricky: Brilliant. Sold some tickets, the neighbors were cracking up. Steve: Yeah. Why did you fall over? Did you kick yourself in the head? Karl: Because I kicked my height, and me leg got high up but I was that chuffed that I got that high, I didn't think of putting my leg down again. Ricky: -Laughing- What did he look like? What the fuck! Steve: He's got to think it all through! I thought it was automatic in life! You'd just stay balanced...but you didn't think 'Oh I'm loving this, this is brilliant but what shall I do now? I got me leg up, I'll just keep it up....woaaaaaah'. Ricky: Like a Hitler salute with his leg! What were you doing?!! |

OK, I was going to save this for my grandma's funeral but here goes...A priest and a rabbi are playing golf. As they approach the 18th green the priest says, "after we are done, do you want to go screw some alter boys?" The rabbi responds, "out of what?" It is essential to the role of the artist (and yes, a comedian is an artist) to provoke a reaction. The art may not always work well but I would sooner live with petty offenses than live with unproduced art due to the chilling of creativity. Think about the art student who masturbated with spoiled spaghetti-o's to the applause of her audience. Her art sucked but maybe she will produce something worthwhile in the future, so fap away. Don't be fooled by the topic, this is a censorship discussion. Tosh sucks by the way. |

I'm also pretty sure that I've heard a Sandusky joke at every comedy club I've been to since it happened. The Sandusky would have been less funny before we knew who he was. As a side note, if you are ever in NYC visiting, you must go to one of the good comedy clubs. It's some of the best money you'll overspend. |

The third priest says, "do you think we have time"? |
