IPads. They are in a market segment that makes absolutely no sense to me.

So you have all the same things an iPhone has, yet you can't make a phone call or send a text message on it? You have all the same things as a laptop, however I can't save any of my work on the hard drive, use more than one program at once, or have Flash support? It still costs $400 because of a bigger screen and disk space (which, again, you can’t save any word processing documents on it). Oh, you want internet access other than WiFi, Mr. Consumer? Shell over another $150 for 3G access. Plus the Amazon Kindle is cheaper, has a 3G internet model option, and a non-glare eInk screen.

I just don't get the allure of it. /haters

And Bucky Chris is right. I felt exactly the same way as Ugie until my girlfriend won an iPad at a conference she went to for work. It's a marvelous little piece of technology.

My mother went crazy and bought each kid (family) one for Christmas. I love it as an e-mail, internet and app game player. Would I want it as my only "computer", no. There are word processing/ office apps, but I have no experience with them. Also, technically more than 1 app can't be open at once, but the ones you opened are running in the "background" and it only takes a second or two to flip between them.

My biggest complaint is the lack of any type of camera, but that has been addressed with the new one.

This is completely my opinion and could be wrong, but I think a big part of the popularity is there is a large segment of the population that have little interest in doing anything "computer" related other than e-mail and Internet. Add in that the thing is damn near idiot proof so people that wouldn't be able to turn on a laptop can use these easily. My two 5 year olds open and close apps with no problem.

You can word process on it... it has the Apple equivalent of Office. You can also get the bluetooth keyboard. I also have a program called GoodReader that allows me to Wifi connect to my CPU to use my iPad as a portable HD, so I can put any file I want on there.

I don't have the Wifi version, and to compare the wifi on the iPad to the Kindle is kind of silly.

Glare is an issue.

Flash is simply not a good solution for mobile devices. It eats battery. Flash just recently released a Flash to HTML5 converter, so IMO, this won't be an issue in the future.

The thing people forget is, it's not a necessity. It's not a cell phone and it's not a computer. It's a toy to have in between. great for watching videos on a plane, great for traveling light, great for games, great for reading, great for leaving on the couch to play on. But again, iPad is not something everyone needs. It's just a kick-ass toy.

Borrow someone's for a night and you might change your mind. I've "sold" 5 iPads to people in my office by lending it to them for a day/night.

And as for the price, yes, typically Apple is expensive. But compare it to the other Tablets out there and they are actually cheap, surprisingly.

I borrowed my sister-in-laws for a bit to try the iPad out, and I still wasn't really convinced that it would be worth the money or how I would use it. I'm sure there are many people that can use the device for office emails and other simple tasks, but dropping that kind of coin on something to send emails or play Angry Birds on a larger screen just doesn't seem feasible to me.

However, the new iPad 2 may change my opinion due to the two cameras and Facetime feature, which I imagine could be very useful in both a home and office setting.

BUMP

Today I am hating on people who hold the opinion that NFL players should "suck it up" regarding their salaries and compare their "everyman salary" to those of said players.

"I am a displaced school teacher/plumber/other union worker who makes $20,000 a year, so I don't feel sorry for you NFL players who make $300,000 a year minimum."

Shut up. It's not the same thing and you know it (or, maybe you don't know it).

Let's say your life ambition was to be a plumber; something you started preparing for since before high school. You trained all year long to be the best possible plumber you could be on an annual basis with the ultimate goal of "playing in the big leagues" and get drafted to become a member of the top union in the world. You achieve this goal and now you're making top-dollar. Fast-forward a few years and now your union heads want to take some of that money out of your pocket.

You mean to tell me that you're not going to fight tooth and nail to keep every cent you can, or even attempt to make more money that you did last year?

Sure; $300,000 a year is something that most people will gladly take over their current salary. But you know what? These players also have bills to pay just like you and I; hell, they may even have more to pay. No matter what your annual salary is in whichever profession you find yourself, most people will spend more money than they make. Everyone does it. If people didn't spend money that way, then there would never be any debt.

Stop comparing your salary and lifestyle to that of an NFL player. It simply isn't a valid comparison.

No one making over $200k a year should be in debt. Of course they may still have a house or car payment but that's not real debt.

Maybe if the players who make half a million a year pretended they only made $100k a year they'd be better off. I understand them wanting to make more money but the act of crying poor when you make more in a year than most make in 10 is just as bad. NFL players do have a higher amount of expenses than the average person but every NFL player should have a big reserve of money sitting in a bank right now.

In theory, yes. However, in theory we should all have some type of reserve regardless of how much money we make. People seem to forget that these players are just as whimsical with their money as most Americans on any economic level.

People bitch about being on foodstamps while driving a Cadillac and talking on an iPhone, for example. It doesn't make it right, but it also shows that "the average Joe" also makes bad financial decisions.

I only feel sorry for those who are in debt because of valid reasons like medical bills or even the housing crash. I don't feel sorry for those who could have avoided it but didn't. Every NFL player outside of rookies and some second year players could have avoided any debt issues.

In fact, it's not the same as a guy who makes $40k and is in debt. It's much worse that there are players who are. They had a choice. They choose badly.

What about people who only make 200k a year for three years?
That's not a lot of money in a lifetime is it? When people say things like what you're saying, it sounds like you're thinking of someone who will make that money for 30 years, not an average NFL career of 3.

They should not be in debt. They just won't be rich once their career is done. Then they become a normal working person with a bank account with at least $150k sitting in it.

Obviously they'll have to work somewhere. They aren't set for life. However, they should be financially stable for a while. There is a big difference between being in debt and being financially set for life.

I agree with you that players who make considerably more money than the layperson should have the common sense to protect their assets. However, wouldn't you say that these players deserve the opportunity to spend a little cash on something they want, smart or not?

Before anyone explodes on me about hardworking Americans vs professional athletes and who deserves what, think about it this way: a union teacher purchasing an expensive television or iPhone is probably spending a similar percentge of their annual income as an NFL player who just purchased his mansion in Long Beach. It is all relative, but no one is going to give that teacher a hard time for splurging on an HDTV, right?

Why the need for "on?" I hate the use of "hate on" when the word "hate" by itself serves the purpose.

"I hate people who hold the opinion..." works just fine.

Yes, I'm old.

IMU, I see your point and I agree to an extent.

I would assume that since you and I are roughly the same age we make similar salaries. You don't have any debt, but I have a mountain of debt in student loans, for example. I accumulated this debt because I thought going to college and graduate school was the right thing to do in order to achieve what I wanted later on. For the sake of conversation let's call that me "putting in my time" just like a professional athlete does prior to getting drafted. Once I (hopefully) obtain a leadership position at my company, you can be damn sure I am going to probably splurge on something to celebrate, regardless of those student loans I still have to pay back. Professional athletes do the same thing.

It takes significantly worse decision making to be in debt at $150k a year vs. a $30k a year person.

No. There is a certain level of income that should make you immune to having debt outside of the standard mortgage and car stuff. Every NFL player is significantly over that. They make enough money they can spend a little cash on something they want and still save a ton. That's why I don't feel sorry for them.

Anyone who is in debt doesn't deserve any sympathy if they are buying luxury items.
