Cannabis smoking 'permanently lowers IQ'

Stephen Adams

By Stephen Adams, Medical Correspondent

Researchers found persistent users of the drug, who started smoking it at school, had lower IQ scores as adults.

They were also significantly more likely to have attention and memory problems in later life, than their peers who abstained.

Furthermore, those who started as teenagers and used it heavily, but quit as adults, did not regain their full mental powers, found academics at King’s College London and Duke University in the US.

They looked at data from over 1,000 people from Dunedin in New Zealand, who have been followed through their lives since being born in 1972 or 1973.

Participants were asked about cannabis usage when they were 18, 21, 26, 32 and 38. Their IQ was tested at 13 and 38. In addition, each nominated a close friend or family member, who was asked about attention and memory problems.

About one in 20 admitted to starting cannabis use before the age of 18, while a further one in 10 took up the habit in the early or mid 20s.

Professor Terrie Moffitt, of KCL’s Institute of Psychiatry, who contributed to the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said “persistent users” who started as teenagers suffered a drop of eight IQ points at the age of 38, compared to when they were 13.

Persistent users meant those who used it during at least three of the ages from 18 to 38, and who said at each occasion they were smoking it on at least four days a week.

She said: “Adolescent-onset cannabis users, but not adult-onset cannabis users, showed marked IQ decline from childhood to adulthood.

“For example, individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and used it for years thereafter showed an average eight-point IQ decline.

“Quitting or reducing cannabis use did not appear to fully restore intellectual functioning among adolescent-onset former persistent cannabis users,” she said.

Although eight points did not sound much, it was not trivial, she warned.

It meant that an average person dropped far down the intelligence rankings, so that instead of 50 per cent of the population being more intelligent than them, 71 per cent were.

“Research has shown that IQ is a strong determinant of a person’s access to a college education, their lifelong total income, their access to a good job, their performance on the job, their tendency to develop heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and even early death,” she said.

“Individuals who lose eight IQ points in their teens and 20s may be disadvantaged, relative to their same-age peers, in most of the important aspects of life and for years to come.”

The cognitive abilities of the 10 per cent of people who started in their 20s - who could loosely be classed as college smokers - also suffered while they were still smoking.

However, if they gave up at least a year before their IQ test at 38, their intelligence recovered, suggesting their brains were more resilient and bounced back.

Prof Moffitt said adolescent brains appeared "more vulnerable to damage and disruption" from cannabis than those of fully mature adults.

Reliable figures on cannabis usage among today’s British teens and twentysomethings are hard to come by.

But Prof Moffitt said there was growing concern in the US that cannabis was increasingly being seen as a safe alternative to tobacco.

“This is the first year that more secondary school students in the US are using cannabis than tobacco, according to the Monitoring the Future project at the University of Michigan,” she noted.

“Fewer now think cannabis is damaging than tobacco. But cannabis is harmful for the very young.”

I was going to say the same thing. You can apply that to booze as well.

I, for one, am shocked that repeated use of a drug that is smoke has the possibility of lowering one's IQ. I wonder if a study can be conducted that shows the effect on the brain of constantly bashing your head into a brick wall. Or drinking a fifth of Vodka 5 days a week for 10 years.

Conns, were you under the impression that it raised IQs?

You must be drunk....

You may have personally experienced, or just heard from other people, of the mental boost that they get from smoking. Perhaps, for a short period of time such boost may be true, however in the long run, the effect of the tobacco consumption may be more dangerous to your brain than what you have expected. If you want to better your brain’s well-being, you have to worry about what affects your IQ.

An Addiction Research Center conducted a research regarding the long-term effects of alcohol on an alcoholic’s brain functioning. As expected, alcohol was found to be associated with mental problems and lower IQ scores. And as an addition to their findings, they also found out that long-term smoking has an effect on decreased brain power.

The results showed that alcohol has more severe effects on the thinking skills of alcoholic men who have been smoking for quite some time already. It has an adverse effect on memory, problem-solving skills and even the IQ of these men.

Among these alcoholic subjects, cigarette smoking was seen to be related to reduced mental functioning. However, even though the cause and effect relationship between smoking and the decreased mental performance was not clearly established, there are still some things which point out to the fact that cigarettes are the cause to such effect. In order to prove this point, more studies will have to be conducted.

Aside from these bad vices, there are still other things which may cause the reduction of your brain power.

Other Short-term Causes for Poor Thinking Performance

According to some more studies, foods which include artificial food coloring and sweeteners may be bad for the brain, more especially if they are consumed in large quantities. Usually, the children are the ones more affected negatively by these artificial flavorings and colorings. Examples of these kinds of foods are colas, white bread and hydrogenated oils.

The hydrogenated oils may cause the clogging of the arteries, and thus may result to heart diseases. Because of the clogs, it would be harder for the blood to flow to the brain. Artificially sweetened foods are unhealthy as well because they can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels. These fluctuations may cause short-term brain fogging and even diabetes. Thus, it would be wiser for you to stay away from excessive sugar products.

Aside from these foods, other intangible things are believed to cause decrease of brain power. Personal problems such as egotism may be a factor. Because of egotism, a person may limit his ideas into just one view, which is his own. Because of egotism, he becomes settled with just his original thought and he would think that since his thoughts are more important than others then there is no more need to look at the ideas that come from others.

As you may have noticed, the effects of the bad eating habits as well as the personal problems may just be temporary. Thus, if you stop eating all those junk foods and start eating healthy; and likewise stop being so egocentric, then your brain functioning may just return to its normal performance. Fortunately, these factors affect the brain efficiency temporarily; unlike with alcoholism and smoking wherein the effects really do affect the IQ.

However, despite the effects’ permanence, the fact still remains that you should take care of your brain. You should keep it healthy all the time by doing things beneficial to your mental health. Whether or not the efficiency of your brain is affected temporarily or permanently, the truth is that it is still harmed for a certain period of time. You should know better, your brain performance

I think JORR and I pretty much agree on this topic.

The more evidence to debunk the myth that marijuana is harmless the better though.

I know you're joking but no one thinks that.

Its just that some people correctly assess that alcohol causes more problems.

It would be really nice if someone could make a post on here about this subject without alcohol being brought up.

Right, Im sure painting weed as heroin and booze as a vitamin would be a lot easier if people didnt point out the hypocrisy

The problem is that certain people who drink regularly (and likely drive) like to look down on people who smoke weed while completely excusing their own more dangerous activities because of its legality.

But again, no one thinks marijuana is harmless, so Im not sure why you care what the response to a joke post was.

There are people on this very board that have said marijuana is a harmless drug and many more who cite things like "no one has ever died from marijuana!" to say it without saying it.

I think they are saying its harmless in relation to other drugs but if you took them to mean that Weed can not cause harm, ok then.

I definitely think when they say No one has dies from it, they are separating it from other drugs that frequently kill people via overdose.

That's how I take those comments.

Like Adam Coral (sp) said many years ago, marijuana is ok as long as you are already really smart going in. All it does is lower you to the level of everyone else.

So I mut've been really really smart going in cause I smoke that shit every day and I'm still smarter than 99% of the people in this world.

We had a legitimate discussion on this board that water was more dangerous than marijuana. I think you are looking at it through your cheech and chong glasses.

Of course chronic weed or alcohol use lowers your IQ over a long period of time. They both kill brain cells. Im not sure why this is even news.

I don't think that was the exact discussion. It was probably some "too much of anything can be harmful" tangent

And all that last line proves is that you're a mean drunk

I would say more hardcore drug abusers come from a weed background than a drinking background. But I;m basing that on who I grew up with.

It's been roughly equal from the ones ive met. People like that will always chase the bigger high. You can get more fucked up from drinking than from smoking. Most of them got bored with "just weed" rather quickly. I dont think weed has anything to do with someone becoming a meth addict, but maybe it does.

What does that even mean? it has been proven many times that Alcohol is the gateway drug not cannabis.
