How does this happen more than once? Alarms should of been going off for the people in charge when they were planning it the first time.

Anaheim high school cancels events found to be demeaning
After complaints, 'Seniores' and 'Señoritas' events at Canyon High in Anaheim Hills, where students wore costumes demeaning to Latinos, are canceled.

By Robert J. Lopez, Los Angeles Times

August 22, 2012, 10:52 p.m.

"Seniores" and "Señoritas" events held at an Anaheim high school — in which students dressed as gang members and a pregnant woman pushing a baby stroller — have been canceled after officials concluded the activities were demeaning toward Latinos and their culture.

The events, which have been held for at least three years at Canyon High School, took place during senior activity week in June and were approved by campus administrators, according to school district officials.

The event was canceled after the Orange Unified School District launched an internal investigation in June in response to two complaints filed by former students.

"I conclude there was a lack of oversight/supervision and that the school administration should not have allowed this activity," Aileen M. Sterling, executive director of secondary education for the district, wrote in an Aug. 10 letter summarizing her inquiry.

"Even if strict guidelines were provided," Sterling said, "the result would still lead to hurtful and demeaning messages about the Mexican culture and to the students of the Mexican, Hispanic and Latino descent."

Former student Jared Garcia-Kessler, 19, who graduated last year, said he complained to a teacher in 2011 but decided to file a formal complaint after he learned the event was held again at the Anaheim Hills school.

"Enough was enough," Garcia-Kessler told The Times on Wednesday evening. "I was hurt."

In his complaint, Garcia-Kessler told officials that pictures of the event were featured in the school yearbook and posted on Facebook.

Anaheim has been rocked in recent weeks by demonstrations over allegations of police abuse in the city's Latino community following the fatal police shootings of two Latino men. Activists also contend that the municipal election system discriminates against Latinos, who are about 52% of the city's 336,000 residents but have rarely been elected. A sharply divided City Council recently voted down a proposed ballot measure to create voting districts to help increase Latino representation.

In recent years, about 55% of the students at Canyon High were white and about 16% were Latino, according to a Times database of California schools. The faculty was 87% white and about 8% Latino.

Campus administrators will undergo diversity and sensitivity training, and the school will offer an ethnic studies class for students and hold an International Week activity in the 2012-13 school year, according to Sterling.

In the most recent event in June, two boys dressed as a gardener and the woman pushing the baby stroller. Other students dressed as U.S. Border Patrol agents and "gang members with bandannas and tear drops," the investigation found. Some students wore large sombreros and fake mustaches.

School administrators, who had failed to tell students how to dress for the event, "reacted immediately" and confiscated props and ordered students to remove bandannas and tear drops — tattoos often associated with Latino gang members — according to Sterling's investigation.

She said the actions of school administrators would be referred to the district's Human Relations Department. Administrators also apologized to school staff, Sterling said.

Well, it ended for African-Americans. Every other type of racism still exists.

Racism has long been dead for quite awhile now. Instead, we just have plain 'ol hatred.

I'm gonna post this thought knowing I'll get crucified for it....

Racism exists today. I know it, I hear it, I get it, but its nothing at all like what it was like 40-50 years ago. Yes, there's plenty of room for improbement but we all live in a better place than our parents did and your kids will live in a better place yet.

Just because people aren't having dogs let loose on them of fire hoses being used against them racism shouldn't be talked about? What's your point?

And IMU, some stereotyping is indeed racist. And racism almost always comes from a place of ignorance...

My point was that people say racism is "over" are subjected to mockery when they really shouldn't be. Sure there's a few losers with their rebel flags who talk shit. I just think there s a difference between what was institutional racism (largely extinct) and individual bigotry.

Unfortunately because racism is brought up for so many situations, it has dulled the impact of claiming racism. It is certainly a problem as anyone with their eyes open would admit. There are much bigger issues, that whether wholly racism or not, get overshadowed because of this obsession with using racism as an excuse. Biggest examples I can think of:

1) Black on black violence and black imprisonment rates.
2) Low relative achievement for latinos and blacks.
3) Unemployment rates for latinos and blacks.

Race plays a part in these problems, but there are other factors that can help address these. The biggest would be the level of out of wedlock births/children without two parents in the house.

and I thought it couldn't be racism if the offended group had power. A group that has a population majority as well as a matured institutional/economic infrastructure as Mexicans in southern california most certainly do, cannot claim to not have power.

just an example of why I don't agree with that definition of racism

No. They should be subject to mockery. It's a foolish statement. Racism is still all around us. Just becasue it's "different" or "not as bad" to you doesn't mean it isn't harmful and still very much alive and well. Both institutional and individual bigotry still exist. As you've stated before, you may not live in a place where you see it and you may not be the subject of said racism. So maybe you aren't the best person to tell others that racism really isn't going on anymore...

Ok. I'll never discuss race or racism ever again because of who I am and where I live. I guess that is not an example of bigotry either.

I already conceded that you are correct. There are only a handful of racist people in this country. All good?

I'm not even remotely upset. I'm simply unqualified to speak on the subject due to my race and my residence. I simply won't discuss it if I am unqualified.

Just like you think it's strange for someone who isn't married to give marriage advice, I just think it's odd for someone who isn't subjected to racism to tell those who are that it ain't so bad.

But like I said. You're right. You obviously know a lot about this so I have a lot of things I need to just change my mind about or learn to accept...

Really? So essentially in your opinion every white person in America is unqualified to have an opinion on racism?
I suppose you're right. I, nor 120 million other americans, should be allowed to have a qualified opinion on race relations in america, and that isn't racist at all.

Thank you for showing me how incorrect I am to have an opinion.

I'll see myself out now, of this and all future discussions of race because that's probably the healthiest thing to do, tell everyone not like you that they don't deserve to talk about it.

You're good at this.

You can talk about whatever you like. Strangely enough, I can as well. If that's ok with you, of course.

Is it ok for me to have an opinion? It's your opinion that racism is a thing of the past and is no longer an issue in this country. I believe that it isn't gone and is still a problem. You think people who are subjected to racism are not as reliable as those who aren't when it comes to speaking on racism. I disagree. Not sure why you are getting so upset about this. We can disagree. It's ok...

Just some more clarity...

People can have opinions on anything. We know that. But some people may have a better grasp of a subject than others.

Darkside knows more about gun safety and hockey than I do. I can still talk about both things, but I obviously don't know as much as he does on either subject. Not really a controversial thought, one would assume. But for some reason, it's a foreign idea here...
