Do you have any advice on picking up a used desktop computer to run Windows 7?

Not worth it. All the thrift shops will over price them.

Just pick up a new tower if that's all you need. You can get a scaled down jobber for 2-3 hundred bucks.

I have older P4 computers that can run Windows 7, but they require graphics cards.

What sucks is I want an old machine to run my Older games and they are too expensive right now, too many people just not realistically pricing shit.

You can pick an old Pentium 4 with XP for usually around $50. But if you know someone getting rid of one they're free.

I have a copy of Windows 7, but most stores and sites that you buy a computer from won't separate the hardware from the software or give you much of a discount without Windows installed.

Plop the CPU in, put the fan on top of the CPU, plug a couple power plugs into the Motherboard, connect the PSU to each SATA / IDE drive, close the thing up, and turn it on.

Building your own actually ends up being more expensive because you have to pay individually for each part including case, motherboard, power supply, RAM, hard drive, operating system, processor, fans, disk drives, etc. You're probably up to $500 before you even start to put it together.

I picked up a refurbished Dell with 4 GB of RAM, 250 GB HD and a Core 2 Processor for around $100. I put Windows 7 on it and it runs great.

I tried Linux and I did not like it. I understand its usefulness, but most of the applications I use are not available on Linux. Linux is sort of for people who want to mess around with computer code and command line.

We actually had a neat little project in one of my classes where you could design your own system, you could design a mini D like system with a $500 limit or a gaming maching with a $1200 limit... That 500 limit was a bitch for a lot of people, I could see where getting a proprietary Dell or something for around $400 might be a better deal for what he's looking for. Needless to say, designing the gaming pc was a lot easier.

The best part of the deal was that I picked up a legit copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit for a whooping $5 at the Good Will.

edit: All components go together...I didn't just take the cheapest of the cheap items that would not work together (i.e. LGA 775 mobo with LGA 1155 CPU). All pieces are recent generation technology.

I think the Celeron is a bottom of the line processor.
