If a company has both of these...what's the difference? Understand a seperate title for Chairman...but CEO vs. President eludes me. |

When I searched for it, the first result was one of those "ask random people" sites and that was the most popular answer... ...just curious since I just found out my company now has a seperate President, whereas it was previously one person as CEO/President and Chairman |

Yea, it's totally a crapshoot. Everyone does it differently. At my last company the President was really only in charge of Sales and Marketing. In most cases, the President reports to the CEO if there is one and the CEO is appointed by the board of directors. |

President actually knows how to do stuff. CEO wants to have a resume so he can run for President |

The President hands out huge contracts that put his former team in a hole then spends no money in his current position and tells everyone to wait 5+ years before judging his work. I don't know what a CEO does. |

CEO is the dude that owns the company and calls the final shots. President runs the day to day operations. Of course there are all sorts of variations to this theme. |

Not really My company's CEO is not stationed in Chicago. We have a president who runs this office. Quitting would be a poor decision |

Its all just hierarchical bullshit, but here it goes: The common hierarchy is as follows: CEO = Ultimately responsible for the quarterly and yearly performance of the company. In enterprise-level organizations, you will find them as driving the decisions for such things as major projects and acquisitions. If the company is public, the board of directors will generally define the role and responsibilities. The CEO may also be the Chairman, which is where a President may come in to play. COO or President = Commonly a COO or President is assigned when the CEO is also acting as the Chairman of the Board in an enterprise. This person can generally take on CEO responsibilities and may have a significant amount of decisions delegated to them depending on the setup. CFO = As someone mentioned, the User-Accountant. Responsible for final decisions on budgets for the different buckets / cost centers of a company. CIO = Usually is ultimately responsible for the technology-related decisions of the company. Could also be called a CTO or a Chief Architect. Vice President = VPs will report to the COO and / or CEO directly depending on the structure of the company. VPs are generally partitioned to be responsible for a segment of the company, such as the VP of sales. VPs may also be Senior VPs, which just give them more authority and underlings. Under VPs you have directors, managers, leads and everyone else who does the actual work in a company. |

A CFO is responsible for all financial statements, tax returns, analysis and reports to the Board of Directors, banking relationships, insurance negotiations, tax planning, budget planning and analysis, new market analysis, business development, typically IT oversight (depending on organization size), product cost analysis, mergers & acquisitions, and general party officer among other things. |

Thank you; though, I've never seen them be business development and IT oversight. I just know they are the ones I fight for on budget and every time I do so, I end up in hives. |
