This station used to be good, but has turned to shit over the past year. This announcement is just clarifying that they will officially suck going forward.

I'd listen if they brought back Larry Lujack.

For a day.

Throw Dahl in there with him, and you've got a thing.

They're not going to use the word "oldies"? Someone needs to take a good look at that photograph up above there.

Those guys in that photo look like the "SportsWriters" from that old TV show that used to air on the defunct SportsChannel & FOX Sports Chicago. Based on that photo, Brant Miller looks like the Rick Telander of that group.

All kidding aside, Dick Biondi looks like he's still in shape for an older man.

WLS-FM was killin' it in the ratings by being something close to a bona fide oldies station. Now they're doing the same geriphobic branding as 104.3. "Oldies are for old people, ew. We play classic hits. Everyone loves classic hits." Well, yes, lots of people do. That's why they're all so loyal to the Drive. People are loyal to you for playing oldies. Play oldies.

  They call him The Kid. The guy on the left apparently hat to sit down because the picture was taking to long and his lumbago was acting up.

I still haven't adjusted to the fact that Guns 'N Roses are now considered "Classic Rock".

Tell that to the folks on 97.9 The LOOP & 97.1 The DRIVE. Hard to believe, but GN&R & Metallica are now considered classic rock on many stations.

Bernstein just indirectly referenced this picture on air during tranny without even offering the slightest of attribution.

You know for a FACT that he saw it here.

What a shady sonofabitch.

Or maybe he reads the Rob Feder blog?

As much as people might like the idea of 94.7 WLS-FM now live & local, I'm a little skeptical how long "Chicago's Classic Hits" will last considering the direct competition from 104.3 K-Hits & the long term success of 97.1 The Drive.

Two things to consider. First, 94.7 FM has changed formats as often as we change our socks, or so it seems. Second, if "Chicago's Classic Hits" flops in the ratings, the station's current owners Cumulus Media aren't afraid to pull the plug and try something else. An overreaction? It might...

It might be the first radio station to broadcast from a nursing home, full time.

It might be the first time a DJ dies on air.

It might be the first time that a DJ stops mid sentence to tell those damn kids to get off his lawn.

I didn't say they would right now. Cumulus Media isn't afraid to change formats and lay off employees if it doesn't work. The point I was trying to make is that 94.7 FM has changed formats as often as we change our socks & our clothes for that matter.

When the station dropped CD 94.7 & classic rock around Thanksgiving in 2000, it caught me off guard. They dropped the WXCD call letters for WZZN and became The Zone, and they did a lot of fine tuning from '80s & '90s rock to alternative & active rock before dropping all of that in 2005 to become WLS-FM. They had a good thing going and I'm skeptical it has staying power considering the direct competition they're going to be dealing with.

Here is the point, Junior. You asked a question: "An overreaction?" Then you seemingly partially answered it by saying "It might......" I just wanted you to complete the sentence. Instead, I was given two paragraphs of authentic frontier gibberish. I do not even know what in the holy hell we are talking about!

I agree with you. The irony of this is that 94.7 stepped up--successfully so--to fill the oldies void left by 104.3 flipping to Jack, and the Drive not quite picking up that market. This has been the most stability that 94.7 has had in my lifetime.

The other weird thing is that they're digging up the Chicago Old Fart All-Star Team so that they can...play music that was popular after they were?

Post subject:  Re: WLS FM gets out the time machine....

When 94.7 FM dropped "The Zone" & active/alternative rock in 2005 in favor of what was called "The True Oldies Channel", all the station had to offer was the annoying voice of Scott Shannon before sprinkling in local personalities such as Dick Biondi, Greg Brown & Danny Lake on Saturday nights a year later. Even when the station became WLS-FM, Shannon's voice was all over the place middays & on weekends as the station piped into his syndicated "True Oldies Channel" programming. Scott started "True Oldies" right around the time 94.7 became an oldies station 7 years ago, and hearing his voice was considered a turn off among listeners.
