Post subject: | Garbage/Recycling Question |
Does anyone know definitively if garbagemen prefer the garbage cans and recycling cans on separate sides of the driveway, or the same? Always assumed separate, but I'm not positive. I'd say in my neighborhood it's probably 50-50, but I've never had the chance to ask them. Anyone know? |

I always put them right next to each other, as do most of the people in my neighborhood. I guess we figure the fact that our recycle can is smaller and neon blue, while the regular can is green should be enough so that that even the stupidest garbage should be able to tell the difference. |

I find that garbage men (aka "city utility workers") particularly appreciate screaming civilians running up to their trucks and slinging garbage bags at them like kamikaze warriors. |

My garbage man lets my kids honk the horn on the truck if they're outside. And I put both of my cans on the same side of the driveway, so therefore, by deduction....... Probably on the same side. It saves them 6-8 steps at every house. |

In Arlington if you use a refuse cart in addition to recycling they want each placed on opposite sides of the driveway. Quote: From http://www.vah.com/assets/1/documents/2 ... ochure.pdf
Refuse Cart Program Residents have the option to rent a 95-gallon refuse cart for $2.50 per month. Only refuse and recycling carts/bins provided by Groot are allowed at the curb. Residents opting to rent a refuse cart must place the refuse cart on the opposite side of the driveway of the recycling cart/bin. Refuse carts, recycling carts and recycling bins are to be returned to the home no later than 8:00 a.m. the day after collection. |

In all seriousness, that's pretty cool that you allow your kids to do that. Many parents wouldn't, and it's depressing. |

It does not seem that South Elgin has any rules about this. Quote: From http://www.southelgin.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={4DB8A369-8B2C-4A1B-A9CD-447656EBB690}
Refuse Service Households are responsible for placing containerized refuse in the 95-gallon green cart provided by Allied Waste/Republic Services at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. Place the cart as close as possible to the curb with the wheels facing toward the house. Excess refuse may be placed in plastic garbage bags. There is no limit to the number of receptacles or bags residents may place at the curb provided they weigh no more than 50 pounds and no more than 3 yards in volume, with the exception of construction/remodeling debris and hazardous materials not to exceed the contents of one 30-gallon container or 10, 4' x 4' rolls of carpet. The contractor will collect all kitchen waste including household food, accumulations of animal food and vegetable matter attendant on the preparation of foods, general household trash and refuse, including ashes, crates, wrapping materials, cloth materials, discarded toys, discarded clothes and similar materials that may not be recyclable for any reason, furniture including, but not limited to mattresses, box springs, sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases (one large item per week), fixtures, bicycles, sleds, swing sets, microwave ovens and like items (excluding major appliances) as defined herein, small amounts, less than two cubic yards in volume of earth sod, rocks or debris from remodeling or construction resulting from do-it-yourself projects - if placed in disposable or acceptable containers, or in securely tied bundles not exceeding four feet in length or 50 pounds in weight. On request, the contractor will provide residents with additional disposal service beyond that described for all types of refuse materials including earth, sod, rocks, concrete, excavations and other materials (except for poisonous and toxic materials and large quantities of liquid requiring tank truck disposal equipment). Contact Allied Waste/Republic at (847) 429-7370 for an estimate for any special services. |

Pardon my "get off my lawn", but when the hell did there need to be fucking rules for garbage? Jesus Christ, for years and years and years it was simply 'put the can of shit by the road' and it got taken care of ... now there's more rules and regulations than a friggin' homeowners association. It's garbage, throw it in the fuckin' pile and move along. Between that rant and my morning constitutional, I feel slightly less angry at the world. My standards are pretty bad. |

I'm not even looking for a rule, just wondering what is easier on them. |

We have the opposite sides of the driveway rule. spanky wrote: My garbage man lets my kids honk the horn on the truck if they're outside. I must say, I have never thought about this. I drag both of them out there and sit them side by side, it is amazing but they get picked up every week. |

Yea, mine are separate too. Makes me think it's probably best to separate them. |

Yeah, ours are separate too, but I must be doing something right because my kids get to pull the string that wakes the neighborhood. Spaulding's kids are jealous. The separate sides of the driveway thing are because with the new style of cans, if you have your cans sitting just right, the driver doesn't even have to get out of he truck - they just pull up, have the automatic arm grab the can (hey, hey) and dump it. |

From http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/ke ... 25525.html Quote: Kentucky restaurant shut down after roadkill found in kitchen
Customers at the Red Flower Chinese Restaurant in Williamsburg, Ky., alerted authorities after they spotted something they probably wish they hadn't: restaurant employees wheeling roadkill back to the kitchen. Local CBS affiliate WYMT interviewed the witnesses. The roadkill was apparently a deer stuffed into a trash can. "There was actually a blood trail they were mopping up behind the garbage can," customer Katie Hopkins said. "There was like a tail, and like a foot and a leg sticking out of the garbage can, and they wheeled it straight back into the kitchen." Local health inspector Paul Lawson was called in to investigate. Lawson said the restaurant owners told him they didn't know they were doing anything wrong. "They said they didn't know they weren't allowed to do that. So that makes me concerned that maybe they could have before. They didn't admit to doing it before." The owner said he didn't plan to serve the deer to customers—instead he planned to use it to feed his family. The restaurant has been temporarily shut down but will be eligible to reopen as soon as it passes another health inspection and proves it has been washed and sanitized. |
