Anyone ever been? Any fun? How many races do they run in a night?

I drive past it quite a bit, but I've never been. It's only harness racing, right?

I just realized the other day that Hawthorne does Thoroughbred racing, and their big race is this weekend.

I actually worked an all day concert at Maywood Park many years ago for Safety Service Systems. I remember working backstage at B96's annual "SummerBash" about 6 years or so ago. I don't remember all the acts that were performing, but I remember it was big enough a few years ago that the track played host and it was a 3-day event.

I was stationed backstage and I couldn't quite see the stage setup. Besides the fact it was an all day event & I got paid about 12 hours that day, the headliner was someone named Christina Milian and the only other thing I remember was that she needed multiple dressing rooms.

Other than that, I always passed by the track, right across the street from Kiddieland in Melrose Park...The memories of that amusement park...Priceless!

I used to stable there in the summers. They usually have 12-14 races a night. I think the only race Wednesdays and Fridays now. Eaglo probably knows for sure.

That's a big reason why horse racing in this state is in the shape it's in. Seriously. Tracks like Maywood Park, Balmoral, Hawthorne & Arlington Park continue to not only have less money for the races themselves, but they're worried about the gambling angle with casinoes cutting into their business.

Arlington Park seems to do just fine. Well I believe I read a report that said that betting was up 6% at their park.

I'm not so sure about the other tracks. Horse racing isn't in the greatest of financial shape in this state, guys.

I dunno...back in the day they ran special trains from downtown just to handle the crowds heading there. Every sports segment on the radio and TV gave the Arlington results. Phil Georgeff was a household name. It seemed huge in the 70s.

Guys, I'm also old enough to remember when WCIU 26 used to have a 20 minute horse racing show hosted by "Mr." Ed Connaughton, long before 'CIU became The U in 1995.

How many years ago was that show, SHARK? Many, a few, or 6?

I'm trying to remember when it occurred. The only act I remember on that bill was Christina Milian...

Arlington was up in 2012 but it was because of increased out-of-state betting. On-track betting dropped.

From http://www.drf.com/news/arlington-park- ... on-reports

Quote:
Arlington Park: All-sources handle rises 6 percent, Illinois commission reports

Driven by a 9 percent increase in out-of-state betting on its live races, Arlington Park ended its 2012 meet Sunday with a solid overall gain in average daily handle compared with the 2011 season.

All-sources average daily handle during the May 4-Sept. 30 meet was $3,201,354, up 6 percent from $3,007,458 in 2011 at the suburban Chicago track, according to the Illinois Racing Board. Churchill Downs Inc., Arlington’s parent company, does not announce handle figures. The 2012 daily average includes 89 full days, but excludes one card that was only partly completed because of bad weather. Gross handle for those 89 days was $284,920,506. That number is substantially higher than in 2011, when Arlington raced 85 days.

The out-of-state bump, from a daily average of $2,291,672 in 2011 to $2,488,440 this year, marks the second straight year that out-of-state handle increased. Ontrack betting on Arlington’s races dropped 4 percent, from $417,678 in 2011 to $399,409.

Average field size was 8.2 starters per race, a tiny drop from 8.3 in 2011. Arlington raced its entire 2012 season with purses boosted by casino impact-fee funds that became available in August 2011, thus affecting only the last 1 1/2 months of the 2011 meeting. The racing office struggled during several periods to attract entries, particularly for races on Polytrack. Arlington ran a record 319 turf races in 2012, up from 274 in 2011.

The meet got off to a rocky start because of a contractual dispute between the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and Arlington. Many horsemen declined to enter during opening weekend.

That Wayne Catalano topped the trainer standings with 63 winners came as no surprise: The title was Catalano’s 10th at Arlington, though Chris Block’s barn led the meeting in purses won. But Cisco Torres winning his first Arlington jockey’s crown came totally out of the blue. Torres hadn’t ridden regularly at Arlington for years, and he led the standings most of the meet, beating out 2011 riding champ James Graham, 100-90. Richard and Karen Papiese’s Midwest Thoroughbreds led all owners with 26 wins.

Still dont know why Arlington doesnt have one night a week racing? Thursday night, or Friday?

Maywood Park was a first class fuckhole in the late 1980s and early 1990s when I went to the track as a child. I have visited it a few times since and not much has improved. All tracks have a scum of the earth element that frequent them but Maywood Park seemed to have a higher concentration than Balmoral, Hawthorne, and Sportsman's (moment of silence). Plus, it's a half-miler. so it's slow and tends to cause races to become merry-go-rounds. And Tony Salvaro was the announcer and he had a voice more annoying than Spiegel's. So fuck Maywood Park.

Careful now, Zizou, that's my home away from home you're talking about. I bet if I walked in there tonight Ricky and Racetrack Phil would be sitting in Super Booth #1. Nothing ever changes. There's just less guys as they slowly die off. I'm pushing fifty and I'd bet when I walk in the average age of the patron is lowered by about fifteen years.

I've got a million good Maywood stories from both the grandstand and the backstretch. Here's one:

For those that don't know, when you train a horse you go down along the rail counter-clockwise or the "right" way of the track. If you're just jogging you stay further out in the middle or outside fence and go the "wrong" way of the track or clockwise. When you turn a horse the right way, he knows it's time for business.

So anyway, one morning we were training a set of three pacing colts, going around the track Indian-file. And this goof named Jimmy Durante III was out there jogging one of his rats. My partner was on the front with his colt and as we came down the stretch the first time I saw Durante was way down low almost coming straight at us. I'm thinking, "what the fuck is this jagoff doing?" We yelled at him as we passed but he barely even looked over. The next time around he still hadn't moved out to the middle of the track. So my partner pulled out his whip and whacked him in the middle of his chest. When we got back to the barn this asshole comes over and asks, "what the fuck did you do that for?"

The dates are assigned. They have to have permission to run at night. Arlington requested three night cards at the last two dates hearings. Balmoral/Maywood agreed, but Arlington chose not to use the night dates last season for financial reasons.

Once Quinn is no longer governor it's a near certainty that the tracks will get slots. Maywood is barely hanging on. If they don't get slots soon, that will be the end for them. If something goes bad after they defeat Quinn and a slots bill still doesn't pass, don't be surprised to see Churchill shut the doors in Arlington Heights and look to sell that property for development. They would probably try to do some hocus pocus with the legislature so they get to keep their OTBs.
