http://gawker.com/5950981/unmasking-red ... on-the-web Just read this story on Gawker and found it pretty interesting. I'm sorta torn on this. I think the troll has every right to post what he did but I also think the journalist had a right to out the troll. That's fair, right? |

Keeping Score wrote: The more I think about this, the more I think he should not have been outed. To be fair, I stopped reading the article after like 57 paragraphs, so I may have missed something, but if he was posting within the rules of the website and they were allowing it, then no, he should not have been outed. I think the article put it pretty succinctly: "...if 14-year-olds didn't want their bikini pictures to be posted to Reddit, they should not have taken them and uploaded them to their Facebook accounts in the first place. If Brutsch did not want his employers to know that he had become a minor internet celebrity through spending hours every day posting photos of 14-year-olds in bikinis to thousands of people on the internet, he should have stuck to posting cat videos." You should remember that the next time you post as Juggs. |

Keeping Score wrote: It just seems like a slippery slope. I'm not defending the dude, his topics were deploarable. But heck, we've already had instances on this very board where members didn't care for other members and tried to get them fired from their jobs for posting from work. Was that ok? I missed that episode. Must have been during one of the times that BF de-activated my log in. With that being said, if you have a company policy about posting during work and you flaunt it, who is responsible for that? And I think this guy possibly posted during work and with deplorable topics. |

i'm still not sure i understand why this guy did it...push the envelope to expose something about ourselves (he kinda did that with "jailbait") but he kinda seems like assange...an anarchist without a cause. oh well. trolling is the new hacking. |

Reddit is just 4chan with its pants (usually) on, but Adrian Chen is a pathetic white knight fueled not by doing real good but by getting pageviews. |

I wonder if anyone has started a CubsSuck section on there yet. A new member named "Peacefulsquarefootage" might need to bring something to this community. |

someone should be doing an expose on everything Adrian Chen does the moment he/she leaves his home as public actions have consequences I think it's just great that we don't need the government spying on our every move as we will willingly do it to each other just for sport. |

Killer V wrote: So tell me why this guy should have remained anonymous. You are thinking like a good citizen. I would wonder what was so remarkable that one person in an environment of million(s) of anonymous people deserved different treatment. The answer needs to be better than he made posts offensive to some, because that is a subjective standard. |

The answer needs to be better than he made posts offensive to some, because that is a subjective standard. I hear what you are saying, which is why I said I was initially torn on it, but im leaning more towards the "actions have consequences" side of the debate. of course they do...but the "action" taking place is being performed by an agent of reddit. If the content is offensive, it is Reddit's content. Perform the expose on Reddit and let the public decide if it is acceptable....but she did not do that and the language of the writer gives a pretty clear indication that this was a personal vendetta (even the quotes she tries to use don't seem to fit with the narrative she is attempting to create). This was an abuse of her ethics, whatever those may be for reporters and I would hope she would never find work at a legitimate news source due to this piece. I am left asking myself what the point was of this piece. It clearly wasn't to put a stop to offensive material on reddit. It wasn't even to stop a particular kind of offensive section of reddit as someone else will take up this guy's work. She didn't even want to stop one particular poster as he offered to stop and delete everything he had done in the past. No, all she wanted to do was out him. now actions have consequences so extrapolate the actions of the reporter and determine if they are acceptable...displaying the personal information (and his family) of a person not because of offensive posting content (as I explained above, she really didn't care about) but only because he is popular is full on sociopathic behavior. She is the stalker she decries in her story. Oh, and the Cubs suck. |
