Did anyone else read the cover story on Sunday? I'm not sure how to feel about the story of the Georgetown professor who won the genius grant. The story would have seemed to focus on the genius grant. Instead it seemed like a hatchet job on Fenwick as being a racist schoo...but it was done from the perspective of a an admitted loner who didn't fit with either the AA or whites at the school and who followed up the traumatizing experience by going to even whiter Georgetown. The professor's feelings are his own and they are true for him but should they be taken as having objective truth? It seemed like sensationalist to have write about this achievement but have more than 50% of the article focused on racism at the school. |

It's an odd story, but it's unfortunate and sad that his experience there was like that. By his own admission he came to Fenwick with issues, but being treated that way only increased their intensity. |

Do you consider it a fair and accurate characterization of Fenwick at that time period? |

I will ask him. It was tough for African Americans. There was 8 in the entire school at the time. I heard the n word more than once, but it was not by any means a regular occurence and it wasn't met with indifference either. I never heard a racial comment from a teacher. |

I would hate to have my former teachers at Fenwick interviewed about what I did in high school. http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/1577 ... long-road- to-genius.html |
