A question for the board. My wife signed up our son for indoor soccer this fall/winter. He isnt even 3 yet (not til end of February). Am I being unreasonable thinking that this is a stupid waste of money? This seems way too young for organized sports, what say you denizens of the CSFMB?

I'm childless, so take my opinion for whatever. That seems ridiculously stupid.

Too young. He would get the same fun experience running around the park at that age, and that's free.

Was it as pointless as I think it will be?

Don't think of it as soccer. It isn't. It a bunch of little kids running around having fun for the hell of it. (hopefully)

I do have a son actively in sports, but I always look both ways before giving an opinion here.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here. It is completely up to you and your child.

My guess is somewhere around 5, but to be honest a lot of the same things that happen at 3 will happen at 5. As long as they are having fun and running around with friends, I think it can be a positive experience for them.

I sincerely hope you ask Dan Bernstein, Hank. His opinion is more important than any you will find here.

I coached 4-5 year old t-ball one summer...75% of those kids didn't want to be there. It is just too young to have a structured sport...they'd rather just mess around at the park, as DB said.

I coach 7th grade football and some of them would rather just be at the park.

It's probably not "soccer" as you would picture it. It's more like social/exercise time. There will just happen to be a soccer ball or two there.

At least that's what it was with my kids.

I came up with a way to increase the pupularity of soccer a couple weeks ago. There should be a second ball added to the game. This could also be done in hockey. Can you imagine how ridiculous it would be to have to track two pucks at once on the TV screen?

The sooner you can expose your child to unbridled disappointment and the agony of defeat, the better.

Same goes for energy drinks and alcohol.

I think you should be thanking whatever craven image you call a god that a woman allowed you to reproduce with her and agree to whatever she chooses for the child as evidence of your gratefullness.

and yes, it is too young, but we live in an absolutely insane society where parents think they are shaping a future scholarship winner and it doesn't hurt the kid so, why not

The only problem I have with this is the sport in question is soccer. You really want Hank Jr. listening to Phish and playing hackey sack mannnnnnnn. I say sign him up for a more noble pursuit like football or boxing or mixed martial arts. Never to early to learn how to apply a choke hold.

I think anytime a 3-5 year old kid can get out to socialize with other kids that same age, and get to see some sort of authority figure other than the parents and grandparents, its a good thing.

I would just look at it that way, Hank. But also tell him he will be sleeping in a tent outside all winter if his team doesn't win the Championship!

If it were a real sport then it might be a bit early but its soccer so it really doesn't count. Its never too early to learn how to grow your hair out, wear bright colorful pre-wrap head bands while running around on a patch of grass. Falling on the ground and crying is probably encouraged by the coaches scouting for the 5-7 year old league.

In my experience with 3 kids, soccer is probably the best sport for them at that age- too many rules to remember to properly hold a game of baseball, football or even basketball. this will boil down to a giant mass with 20 legs all kicking at the ball at the same time, with two kids snoozing in a goal at either end, but it is exercise and a good chance for that player/coach (not relative) relationship to form. I can still remember my middle son scoring 7 goals in one game as a four-year-old, just 6 months after I had broken his leg. Twelve years ago, and still awesome!
