Ever since my dad almost keeled over about six months ago, I've been calling my parents every night, just to be a good son. (I'm an only child). Unfortunately, they drive me nuts. My mom is always complaining about trivial things. Everything with her is gloom and doom. Anyway, this shit puts me in a bad mood, which effects my own family. What is my moral obligation here as far as calling my parents? |

I'll text my dad a couple of times a week and talk to him a couple times a month. My mom is holidays only and even that is going by the wayside. |

I barely talked to my parents for 10 years when I lived in E.P., hardly saw them, hardly talked. I see/talk once a week now that I'm in Almost Canada, IL. We're getting older...they're getting older faster. Once a week at least. |

My dad: a couple of times a week...usually have to put up with his meatball thoughts after Bears games. Mom: out of my life since I was a kid. Grandma (dad's mom): roughly every other day to make sure she's not dead. |

To answer the question (since I do have experience at having parents and would hate to be called out for talking out of turn), I call my mother about once a week. Usually on one of her off days from work. |

What is my moral obligation here as far as calling my parents? I'd say deal with it Hatchetman. Both mine have been dead for over a decade. Used to talk to them once or twice a week. And, while, in my mind, it was annoying at the time, I still think back and laugh about my Mom telling some story from her Bridge Club. I saved a bunch of her old emails and usually read a few once a year or so. Glad I saved them. |

Usually once or twice a week for both mom and dad (both divorced and remarried). I don't get see them nearly as often as I would like, since most of my family lives four hours away. Quite a bit of texting as well. I'm thankful I have a great relationship with both parents. |

My dad is dead and my mom is a deadbeat. I don't talk to either of them. As for you Hatchetman, tell your mom to use some perspective and tell her to chill the fuck out. If you want to be a jerk, bring up the stuff she was complaining about last week and ask er how she has fixed or adjusted to the issue. |

I shoot for once a week with my Mom. Every day with my Dad, but it's more in that glowing Obi-Wan kind of way. |

At least 12 times a day. I wonder if my parents post on another message board how annoying their son is? |

I play golf with my Dad at least twice a month if our schedules/weather allows in the summer, and now have been playing in a band with him for the past few months. I see my Mom at least once a week, usually twice. Sometimes its annoying, most of of the time its not. On the days it is annoying, at least I get to visit the dog I would think that the number of visits will go down once we move to Orland, but still I can't envision a circumstance with them being alive that I would see them any less than 3-5 times a month. I realize how I lucky I am to be able to do that. |

What is my moral obligation here as far as calling my parents? I do not enjoy speaking to anybody on the telephone, and my Mother used to be, as they say, a "long talker." I must freely admit that this used to irritate me a little bit. Now, however, my Mother can barely hold a conversation. Most of the "conversation" consists of long heartbreaking pauses during which she searches in vain for complicated words such as "the" and my first name. When she can communicate, it is often to describe memories of things that never actually occurred. So, all things considered, I guess the old calls were not so bad. |

2-3 times a week. They usually come for dinner or to watch the kids one night a week too. I don't think Mr Spaulding calls his much. |

Every day. I make sure I spend time with them and my children altogether at least once a week as I think it is important for them to have a strong relationship with their grandparents. I encourage the same closeness with my in laws. I used to take them to see my grandma every Sunday. There are some days where it can be a chore but these relationships definitely enrich my life. I feel sadness for those of you with bad family relationships. I don't mean that in a condescending way. I really feel that we benefit in countless ways from tight family relationships. |

My folks live about 1.5 miles away, I talk to Mom two or three times a week. Dad has been my #1 hired man on the farm until his cancer-induced spine fractures this summer. We would spend up to 20 hours a week together, now it is usually 2-3 times of chat for a few minutes. During sports seasons, they will come to all the kids games, etc, so there is a bit more. My wife relishes the fact that the Lake lies between she and her parents in Brewtown, misses her Mom, but the Parkinson's stuff with her Dad is tough to deal with... |

Very well said, everyday when my son is with me, I make him to talk to his grandmother. She is 620 miles away and I think he is closer with her than his grandmother that is 15 minutes from him. |

I would give anything to talk to my Father again. He died in 1993 on the day that we sold our house in St. Louis because I took a promotion to transfer back home to Chicago. Needless to say it was a bittersweet homecoming. My Mother is still alive & at 78 is in great shape mentally & physically. I call her every other day & see her about once a week. No matter how badly your folks might drive you nuts, you gotta put yourself in their shoes. It can be lonely growing old by yourself. A simple phone call might be your Mother or Fathers highlight of their day. |

Both my folks have passed on and I wish I could have more opportunities to visit with them. Those of you who have parents still in your lives take advantage of these days, you won't always have them. |

Aside from the easy argument that I'm a bum, I live with my 96 year old grandfather. Not only did he take me in 10yrs ago when i was residentially transcendental due to some problems in my life, but he also physically saved my life when i was 6-7 years old and drowning in a pool in durango, colorado. He ran into the pool fully clothed and dragfed me out.... at age ~70 or thereabouts. So yeah, on the surface I'm 32 and I live with family so [insert HURR DURR LOSER stuff here] but i owe this man my life twice over. He never gave up on me, so after I fixed myself up and got to a pount where i could move out i didn't. And yeah, gpa wants me to move out and live... he's told me i might regret missing out on the late 20s/early 30s bachelor pad experience... but like Liverpool FC he will NEVER walk alone. I'm going to personally make sure that he doesnt die alone in a home; he'll be with family @ his home. I take him and dad out to brunch every sunday, bears notwithstanding. Its proper, if not overtly ceremonial |
