I thought about putting this in the DBOTW section, but I am not sure where I stand on this. It's movember, and I needed to find some fake mustaches. I drove past a dollar store so I decided to go in and look for them. As a side note, it is perspective changing to go into one of those and see people shopping for food and other stuff. It made me feel lucky to have what I have. Anyways, back to the reason for the thread. I found them, and took them to the front register. My bill was like $2.30 and the girl behind the counter asks me if I would like to donate a dollar to buy a military child a gift for Christmas. I figured that was nice, and I'm baller enough to not need a dollar, so I said yes. She then pulls out this cheap ass fake etch a sketch thing that probably cost about 2 cents, scans it, and throws it into a bin where there are all sorts of other cheap toys that will probably break before the kid even gets home with it. Now, I had two concerns, assuming that is what the dollar store is actually giving them. 1) What a cheap ass piece of garbage toy. The toy aisle was filled with better toys than that. My fake mustaches were better than that. 2) Is that really it? I can only imagine that toy costs the Dollar Tree about 20 cents. Are they taking 80 cents of profit per toy? If so, that's terrible. Now, it's obviously better than nothing, but I can't help but feel unfulfilled about my generous donation? So, is Dollar Tree doing anything wrong? |

If it happens to be the only toy a kid gets on Christmas, its going to make him happy to have a present to open and play with for a little while, even if it is a 30 cent piece of crap. I don't think they are doing anything wrong. |

Good effort by dollar tree just misthought. I think it may serve them better to just donate a dollar toward a gift fund. If this is bugging you enough to post on message board, then maybe email someone from their website and give them that idea? |

I once lived in a town too small to sustain a Wal-Mart, so it only had a Dollar General. My trips there were more memorable than trips to a dollar store should ever be. |

I don't care for companies that abuse the good will of their employees and/or customers and then take a bow themselves, let alone profit from such "charity". On a somewhat related note, an Italian restaurant on Harlem in Harwood Heights has a Christmas tree and asks customers to bring gifts to be distributed to underprivileged children. A couple years ago my cousin brought such a gift and while she was eating dinner saw a young friend or relative of the owners open the gift she had brought. She was told that it was the child's birthday and they had no gifts for him and her gift would be replaced. |

So, we spent most of the weekend in the city. All in all, it was awesome. However, after eating lunch in the Hell's Kitchen area, we were walking and we stopped at an intersection. All of a sudden, a person who would best be described as unstable gets right in my face and starts talking about how bullshit the regents exam is and all sorts of other stuff. Eventually, the light changes and I start walking to get away from him. He then says, in my wife's direction "You're a bitch and a fucking burrito. I'm going to beat the shit out of you". We continue to walk, and he realizes that Boilermaker Rick is not one to fuck with, so he goes on his merry way. So, who was wrong in this situation? Was it me or him? |

And you can relive the experience almost very day in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. |
