Post subject:  Spoiled Kids?

Got the niece and nephew , 7 and 8, years old.

My mom calls and asks if I am contributing to the fund to get them holiday gifts? I say, OK, how much. $200

$200, from me? My other sister, mom, and their parents for $1000?

So I asked what are we getting them?

My 8 year old niece wants the Ipad mini...because the I pad she has, isnt good enough???????

and my 7 year old nephew wants WiiU...because he is bored with Wii, X Box, Playstation????

Not against the 200$, but do these gift requests seem like some spoiled shits?

why do you know so much about boys requests in that age group?

Post subject:  Re: Spoiled Kids?

I do not spend $100 per niece and nephew. $20 max and that's only because I do not have kids of my own. If I did have kids, the only ones getting gifts would be my godchildren.

You should get them a DVD of the movie 'Big'

Sounds like the mom is trying to take advantage of the rich uncle. I'd tell her that you'll spend 10% of what they are spending on them for Christmas.

Fuck that. Tell her to pound sand. They aren't your kids and you have no obligation to give them a "happy" Christmas.

I'm not spending $200 on my own kid, let alone a nephew. An IPad for a 7 year old? You'd have to be out of your damn fool mind.

I can't relate to that. My son is 7 and I'll be damned if I spend more than $75 dollars on Christmas gifts for him.

Big Fan, you should've PM'ed that to Dr. Ken or NSJ.

I will probably spend about $200 bucks on my son this year but if my wife said we were going to do that for our niece I'd tell her no way in hell.

You're going to be giving your nieces and nephews $200 worth of shit this year?

And since when does money and gifts make you a better person.

Shockingly shallow.

IDK? If I have extra I would spoil my kids and when I don't I tell them I don't. Seems to me they learn a little bit that I am not an endless source of stuff and the money is not endless. My kids are teens and I would guess the biggest thing I bought was a laptop for daughter and xbox for the boy?

Not ever saying no to your kids and using/teaching them the credit card life is worse.

Damn. Whenever I have kids, if possible I plan on spending what my parents did, $100-150 a kid for xmas. No fuckin way I would give me nephews and nieces $200 worth of shit, even if I had bigfan money. There's definitely a point of diminishing returns with money spent on kids under the age of 10.

Depends on what it's for. There are pretty good apps if your kid has a speech issues, teachers know good ones for areas they have trouble with. It's also a gift for mom if you have 2 or more kids and you are taking one to hockey, dance or whatever.

I dunno. You volunteer your time with them and have talked about your sister before. It sounds like you guys are close. I wouldn't say her request is unreasonable but I don't know that I'd ever feel comfortable making it. Gifts should always be what you want to give. If you think 200 is too much that's fine. Get them what you want.

The monetary value isn't what is important to the kids. You want to get them something they want - something they'll enjoy. They are your nephews and nieces. I've got all my gifts lined up...

And what if what they want is ridiculous? A 4 year old with a ipad? That's just nuts.
I don't have any nephews or nieces but my 6 year old cousin was happy as hell with the $25 walkie talkie I got him last year. Fuckin loved it. And I got one of those goofy old school football games for my other one, you know the Tiger game? Yeah, little fuck loved it. He's 7. Perfect happiness (and good cousinry) for $40.
