House we just got has a fireplace. Had a gas starter, that has since been capped off, Before we do anything with that fireplace we want to have it cleaned, sterilized, and disinfected! No, actually we want it cleaned, but we need to have it inspected as well.

Anybody have experience with a company that would service the SW burbs? Good? Bad? Anything we should ask for or about?

Thanx!

You need a new liner and some masonry work or else your whole house will burn to the ground, even without lighting a fire. That'll be $3000 please.

I've used Ashwipe.com and was happy with their work/price. Dunno if they go south though...

This field is rife with fraudsters IMO. Better get a couple of opinions.

Well just built a house with 7 fireplaces in it, but what would I know.

I just built a house that has 15 fireplaces in it. Afterwards I cooked up a 500 dollar roast in my brand new, gold coated outdoor oven...it costed my 10 g's but I pay for quality. I had Jerry Reinsdorf over for lunch as well, I have some great stories to tell.

I didn't know that new fireplaces had to be cleaned.

Preventative maintenance. It sounds like you need a new fireplace guy.

Sarcasm doesn't always translate in print. It was a jab at bigfan for his comment about my plumber.

Too bad That Plumber isn't the real company name. He's getting some pretty decent press. :)

I don't have names for places in the SW burbs, but expect to pay $135-$200 for a cleaning and the highly recommend re-installation of the gas starter.

Even though we are on the do not call list we get a call from a chimney sweep a few times a year. I keep telling them we don't have a chimney but they keep calling back.

I had to look that site up to make sure it was an actual company. I guess it's good if the name is memorable!

Look at Frank with the subtle brag about being so rich that he can have a fireplace and natural gas in the same house.

first rehab I ever did, the plumber checked the gas line with a very sophisticated system. He ran a match along the gas pipe....

He did find a leak! lol.....I also dove for cover when he did.

Nope, dont use him anymore, but he is still in biz!

Similar story of an electrician who tested wires by how far he was thrown back.

Go with the sophisticated soapy water bubbles instead.

Underrated. There is always the electronic leak detector.

The best course of action would be to contact your local Fire Department. Often, they have a couple guys that do this kind of work as a side job. If not, they will give you a reccomendation for someone that in solid. Just call the NON-EMERGENCY number!

Actually, it's not terribly unusual to do this.
I personally perfer bubbles.
That being said, it's not unusual, no particularly dangerous.
