Joe Newton is one of the finest and most revered guys to ever coach high school sports. Not to mention one of the most successful. Why would anyone want to punch Joe Newton?

He runs his kids into the ground and none of them ever do much in college. But he does win at the HS level.

Isnt the idea of a track team to run the kids into the ground?

no, it's not. As a former distance runner, I can tell you about workouts and such that while they will prepare you to run cross country and track succesfully, don't mess up your future ability to run at a high level. It's easy to devise workouts that work in the short run but fail after three or four years.

Isn't this true for many HS sports teams?

Basketball players and wrestlers aren't going anywhere during Christmas vacation, that's for sure.

Sure wasn't a requirement for our track team at Lyons Township. We didn't even have practices over break.

We just go the Thursday and Friday of Spring Break since we always have a meet that Saturday. The better kids usually still come in to run, throw, lift, jump etc the days we give off.

Most of our kids don't go away anyways.

They expected us to run over break and could come to the track if we wanted, but no one was getting run off if they didn't come.

My HS wrestling team had practice or meets/tournaments every day of Christmas break. The schedule for basketball was similar.

Same here. Christmas break was so busy with practices and games that for those years we opened gifts on Christmas Eve so I could sleep in on Christmas morning. I believe Christmas was the only day we didn't have practice, a game, or both until NYE.

Sometimes the obvious response is also the most enlightening.

Did you find it difficult managing two teams playing in the same season?

bye the way, I just love it that an Elmhurst Steve post is controversial even regarding something as innocuous as praise for an aged, hall of fame high school coach

I would have said the same to anyone, although I figured it'd be shakes defending him because Newton seems like a guy that withhold water from his kids.

I wasn't on the basketball team. I was just commenting that they practiced or played every day (including Christmas) of winter break.
