That may be his side of the story, but there are so many flaws with it that there is virtually no chance that is the correct answer.

The simple answer is that he is gay and does not want to come out and hurt his draft stock. The whole picture lines up much better than Teo learning he was duped and then continuing the lie.

Just keep one thing in mind. If Teo was taken for a ride and then joined in to save face, he would have had to do it BEFORE her fake death since he was lying prior to the Michigan/Michigan State games about meeting her. This contradicts his story that he learned it around the Heisman trophy presentation.

Lying about meeting someone who you met online is EXTREMELY common. I have done it. Im sure many others here have done it as well. There are fucking E cards joking about it, that's how common it is.

That lie is totally separate from this other stuff.

Again, I dont KNOW what happened. I do know that it is very believable that he lied about meeting "her" online because he was embarrassed to have had to meet a girl online. That lie is completely separate from the overall hoax.

I see the people that openly hate Notre Dame think Te'o is guilty of everything. Shocking.

When this first started, people were ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that no one would have an online only relationship. We know that's false.

Now, Rick is using the fact that Te'o lied about the meeting to speak to his character. I would submit that telling that lie is not a big deal. I would compare it to a 19 year old kid telling his parents he met a girl at a football game when it was really a bar. (So mom and dad dont ask why he's in a bar)

No, it's not. He claimed to have met her in person multiple times. He was lying about this case well before he supposedly found out it is a hoax. That is why your scenario is virtually impossible. You seem to think he continued the hoax once he found out. However, he was perpetrating some level of hoax for years. He was actively adding to it right around the death of his grandmother and her. He then continued to behave the EXACT same way after he supposedly found out. His behavior was unchanged.
I would consider it if he had announced it immediately when finding out about the hoax but he not only happened to pick it at the perfect time, but actively continued to behave the exact same way all the way up to the national title game.
Society yes, sports no. It's very plausible that Teo wanted to hide his homosexuality and this was a way to do it. It makes a lot more sense than his current explanation that he learned about this in early December and continued the hoax he was a "victim" of.
Being gay and doing things to hide the fact is EXTREMELY common too. What is your point? We aren't arguing that Teo lied about his relationship. We know he did. It's because she didn't exist. The questions are why would he do that, why would he continue to do it, and how could he have no interest whatsoever in meeting her. The answer to all of those questions have a logical explanation. He could have flown her out to one Notre Dame football game(oh wait, the car accident made that impossible! How lucky!). He could have flown out to see her. He could have skyped with her, or asked for another picture. Just let that sink in. He supposedly had 2 pictures of her!
The problem is that he seemingly was going along with the hoax for the whole time even when it reached absurd levels, and then when he supposedly learned of it, he continued it. No benefit of the doubt there.
