Some people swear by it. Some say spanking is ok. Some say more than that is ok. Some say its never ok.

What do you say?

Nothing wrong with swatting kids on the ass, especially if theyre your own. Mrs Rogue is more of a timeout type, but theres no way she has the strength to keep me on the stairs more than 4 seconds so it usually doesnt work out to well.

Not a parent yet, but I would have no problem with a spanking now and then, or pulling a shirt collar or something like that. Would never pull out a belt or make the kid(s) eat soap.

Me too. Never a bar, though, just the liquid stuff which was worse.

In a perfect world, with perfect child moulding, probably don't need it or want to use it. The world is far from perfect. It has a place in my estimation. My guess is there is a time in the kid's development where it might be necessary to apply the basic spank. Not sure I would ever do any other type of hitting. It's a slippery slope. If the kid doesn't fully get why he/she is being spanked, did it serve a purpose? Do you have to up the ante to try and get a point across later if the reason for being spanked in the first place continues?

I spanked my daugther twice.

Both times, I think I would have had the same result by other means.


Ill never hit her. I think spanking a toddler is about as far as it goes.

People talk of smacking their kid in the face. Ill never do that.

My mom did soap and when she was out of ideas smacked me in the face until I got old enough to see it coming and block it.

Spanking was always and still is in the discipline mix for Mrs. Effective and I- although with the youngin's now all 13+, it is less likely. She is an elementary school teacher who would not spank at school, but who was adamant about using it with our kids. However, I can not place a total of a dozen actual discipline spankings over 3 kids and 19 years to date. I only remember getting one spanking from my Dad, and he told me before how disappointed he was that he had to do it- that hurt far worse than the belt.

Mrs. K has long known which students need the spanking and has used her communication with the parents who are so inclined to take the matter into their own hand, so to speak...

Would not think of hitting a child in any other way- slap or punch, etc.

Also, I think you're teaching your kids that problem solving involves violence.

K-Effective raised the most important part of the spank. This is why I am spanking you. Spank. It hurts me to spank you and I don't want to do it. But you cannot continue to do this.

"the talk" along with the spank can be effective (s0rry). I stole a lot around 5 - 6. Mom/dad tried the talk with no corporal punishment. Young beni kept doing it. I got spanked and explained. It was serious and it hurt them too. No more stealing.

Still, a really tough call. Didn't work too well with my sister.

Yes I I've done it. No belts or foreign objects or anything like that though. Just my hand. It's always been a last resort because it's rarely been necessary. The mere threat of a spanking is usually enough of a deterrent for him.

Many people my age (32) and a few years older seem to take pride in how much their parents "beat their ass" growing up

You never hear parents bragging about it though

I can't even raise my voice with my 6.5 year old daughter without feeling like a fucking tyrant, so there's no chance I'd ever raise a hand to her.

I'll talk to him and ask him if he knows what he did wrong. He'll answer and then I make sure to tell him I love him.

I got spanked but I never feared my father. I do spank. One kid keeps saying, "that didn't hurt". I tell him "it wasn't supposed to hurt".

We don't do it.
Time out/positive reinforcement for good behavior is what we do. That's the part people forget about time-out, it doesn't teach by itself. You need to reinforce positive behavior. We use a 'marble' system, each child has an ice cube tray and every time they do something good that they were not told to do they get a marble. When their tray is full, they get a prize from a basket full of prizes (coloring books, bracelets, matchbox cars, etc). It works pretty well.

But then again, what do I know, I'm just a psychologist.

My parents came from Europe, so they thought they were going easy on us.

My mother used a wooden spoon on my brother and I, but she is a tiny woman, and that didn't even hurt. The old man just used his hands. A slap across the face, flicking the back of my head with his finger, and lifting me off the ground by my hair were his favorite methods when I was grade school aged. When I got to high school, it was a two handed shove which slammed my head into a wall. Good times.
