Facts: My 2005 VW Passat (only 60,000 miles) burns oil like a sonofabitch. "Blue Book" trade in value is about $9500. New car is gonna cost at least $30,000. New motor is at least $5K but then you have a new motor in an old car.

Any thoughts? :drunken:

Yes, but wait until the summer when the major incentives are available.

Yeah, I considered that. But this is last year for current model of GTI...would run low $20s. Then you get to be spending that much and maybe you want a real "grown up" car instead.

You can buy a lot of oil for $30,000.

I assume you have had it checked and there is not a mechanical reason that can be fixed?

Quote:
From http://voices.yahoo.com/why-car-burning ... 40908.html

Why is My Car Burning Oil so Quickly?

Why is my car burning oil? That is one question that many people want to know. This question applies to both new and old cars. Most people want to know the answer to this question simply so they can find the most cost effective way of dealing with it.

There are a number of reasons and factors to consider when you find yourself in this situation. There are situations where your car isn't really burning the oil. You could simply have an oil leak which continuously drains the oil until the oil light comes on. You can spot the oil leak by spraying the entire area of the engine with brake cleaner. This will clean the oil off. You will most likely be able to see where the oil of coming from within a few minutes or if you drive the car again. You can either try your luck with one of the many oil leak or oil smoke additives that you can find in your local auto parts store. In many cases, these products won't do what you thought they would do. In this case, you will have to take it to a person who knows how to install new gaskets to reseal the leak the way it was designed to be seal.

Another reason you car could be burning oil is simply that the engine has a very heavy amount of wear and tear. A normal engine is designed to let a very small amount of oil pass through the pistons. This oil is supposed to leave the chambers through the PCV valve system. There are two situations where you car can begin burning oil. The first one is if your PCV valve system becomes clogged. This can cause motor oil to build up in the chambers and begin burning. The other way is when your pistons are letting too much oil pass by them. Many people call this blow-by. Even though the PCV system may be doing its job, too much oil will inevitably build up in the intake manifold and inside of the engine itself. You have three options. You can clean the PCV system, have the engine piston heads redone, or you can try using a thicker oil. However, if you choose to use thicker oil, you will greatly reduce the life of your oil pump.

You also don't want to move "down" a level in cars.

Passats are decent... I'm not sure if it was the 1.8 TFSI or the VR6 engine...but still..he isn't going to want to drive a base 2.4L Sonata.

You're right. If this level of car burns oil after 60,000 miles, I shutter to think what a 25,000 dollar car would do. :D

I talked to my mechanic and he said he didn't want to tear the engine apart to figure out what it is. I will probably have the dealer look at it, but I am not hopeful. It doesn't leak oil anywhere and there is no smell of burning oil in the engine compartment. It's burning up somewhere in the engine. It has a V6 2.8L 30 valve engine.

The car has been treated very gently, mostly driven by my wife who drives like an old lady. Oil changes every 5000 miles. Pretty weak on VW's part.

Well somebody more versed in cars may disagree but if you are changing oil every 5000 miles and only have 60,000 miles after 8 years that might be your problem. I do not believe 3 oil changes every 2 years is enough, no matter how little you drive.

Yeah, this thing burns about a quart every 200 miles.

From Yahoo Answers

2005 vw passat engine sludge?
Have you had a problem with your Passat's oil which damaged the engine beyond repair? I need a new engine. I was unaware that my oil changes required specific oil (synthetic) and especially unaware that the bad oil was going to ruin my engine. I brought it to for oil changes at Jiffy Lube and Walmart without them bringing this to my attention. Has anyone had this experience with the 2005 year? Did you somehow get your money back? Does your owners manual state that it definetly needs to be changed using synthetic? How did you fix the situation? I owe $15000 and now it is worth $5500. Corporate is refusing to cover with warranty.

Well that isn't normal. Something is most definitely wrong.

Sure it is. Jiffy Lube type places started the 3,000 mile shit. Read your owner's manual. I doubt that anybody's says every 3K.

My car has an "Oil Life Remaining" feature. I believe it specifically mentions that it will likely be well over 3,000 miles. I believe it normally would tell me to change it about every 7,000 miles.

I remember stretching one of the oil changes on the last car to something absurd like 22,000 miles...

...mind you, I don't have that car anymore...just felt like pointing out how stupid I can be.

Find a car you like with zero percent financing. Buy the car and take the money you would have spent up front and go to Vegas. Gamble that money and that car will end up being free with all your winnings.

Went back to driving the old farm truck when my middle kid got his license last April- have had to put almost $1K into the old girl since then. That $1K in repairs would have equated to about 3 weeks of a payment on a NEW replacement truck. Crap, I even had to ask a coworker for a ride to work one day, how humiliating.

Hatchet- you ought to buy two new vehicles. Somebody has to keep the economy going, why not you?

I wish. Our other car is a 98 Avalon. Thankfully I really only drive that to the train station.

7,500 to 10,000 is the new standard. My manual states "5,000 - 10,000" dependent on driving habits. My Fit's MFD would display oil changes needed every 7,000 miles.

I realize every 3k is bogus but based on his numbers they were driving 625 miles per month. Even with low miles shouldn't oil be changed more frequently than once every 8 months?

A good mechanic can put ultra violet dye in your oil pan. They will run it a while and maybe even have you come back next day. Then they search with a black light for the leak. It is still possible even if you don't smell it that you have some leak. It could burn up on various hot motor sections. Also, oil filters and other things will leak and many times the oil is coming out spreading back along exhaust and burning up. So the driveway doesn't always tell the full story.
