Why is My Car Burning Oil so Quickly?

Why is my car burning oil? That is one question that many people want to know. This question applies to both new and old cars. Most people want to know the answer to this question simply so they can find the most cost effective way of dealing with it.

There are a number of reasons and factors to consider when you find yourself in this situation. There are situations where your car isn't really burning the oil. You could simply have an oil leak which continuously drains the oil until the oil light comes on. You can spot the oil leak by spraying the entire area of the engine with brake cleaner. This will clean the oil off. You will most likely be able to see where the oil of coming from within a few minutes or if you drive the car again. You can either try your luck with one of the many oil leak or oil smoke additives that you can find in your local auto parts store. In many cases, these products won't do what you thought they would do. In this case, you will have to take it to a person who knows how to install new gaskets to reseal the leak the way it was designed to be seal.

Another reason you car could be burning oil is simply that the engine has a very heavy amount of wear and tear. A normal engine is designed to let a very small amount of oil pass through the pistons. This oil is supposed to leave the chambers through the PCV valve system. There are two situations where you car can begin burning oil. The first one is if your PCV valve system becomes clogged. This can cause motor oil to build up in the chambers and begin burning. The other way is when your pistons are letting too much oil pass by them. Many people call this blow-by. Even though the PCV system may be doing its job, too much oil will inevitably build up in the intake manifold and inside of the engine itself. You have three options. You can clean the PCV system, have the engine piston heads redone, or you can try using a thicker oil. However, if you choose to use thicker oil, you will greatly reduce the life of your oil pump.

You also don't want to move "down" a level in cars.

Passats are decent... I'm not sure if it was the 1.8 TFSI or the VR6 engine...but still..he isn't going to want to drive a base 2.4L Sonata.

VAG engines burn oil. This has always been "a thing" just like VAG electrical issues. My boss' Panamera needs to have oil added every 4 weeks.

Yeah, this thing burns about a quart every 200 miles.

Well somebody more versed in cars may disagree but if you are changing oil every 5000 miles and only have 60,000 miles after 8 years that might be your problem. I do not believe 3 oil changes every 2 years is enough, no matter how little you drive.

Sure it is. Jiffy Lube type places started the 3,000 mile shit. Read your owner's manual. I doubt that anybody's says every 3K.

Also, you can get a 2006-2008 Cayman S for anywhere between $24K-$29K.

7,500 to 10,000 is the new standard. My manual states "5,000 - 10,000" dependent on driving habits. My Fit's MFD would display oil changes needed every 7,000 miles.
