The monthly premium for my health insurance went up $120. The coverage isn't all that great but it was relatively inexpensive, and now that that is no longer the case I applied for a policy with BCBS. I was accepted, and need to provide them with a Certificate of Coverage when my current policy is cancelled. The new policy starts this week and when I called about the certificate I asked if I would be a getting a pro-rated refund since I won't be covered under their policy for the whole month. I fully expected them to say "Yes" but was told "No."

WTF?

Has this happened to anyone else? When I call to officially cancel the coverage I'm going to bring it up again and see who I can talk or write to to challenge this. I recently switched auto insurance carriers and received a pro-rated refund from them for the portion of the policy from the cancellation date through the end of the policy.

I knew I should have put something about Mac, Goff, or Beardown in the thread title... :)

FWIW, I talked to the VP of customer service today. If I wanted to be charged on a pro-rated basis for March I would have had to have called 10 days before 3/1 and they would have only charged me for the days in March that I was actually covered by their policy. I asked if that was in any of the material I received when I enrolled. He said he was fairly certain it was and would get back to me to direct me to that portion of their Terms of Service/User Agreement/Whatever.

Still seems like BS to me that I'm paying them for a service they are not providing but if that's they way it is in health insurance I guess I'm out the dough.

Hey, you used to work in the field, so you should know how screwed up it is! :)

You can always try complaining via the consumerist model where you carpet bomb their email system trying to reach all the VPs and such -- that is, if the traditional methods don't work.
