WASHINGTON—The Air Force Thunderbirds, the "loud and proud" precision flying team of F-16 fighter jets, have cancelled plans to appear in Chicago's Air & Water Show in August because of ongoing federal budget cuts, military officials said.

Because of the cuts, known as sequestration, the Air Force has cancelled air shows and fly-overs that are not related to combat readiness, Lt. Col. Brett Ashworth said Tuesday from the Pentagon.

The Thunderbirds, based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, announced recently that its performances would stop April 1. The team is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and had more than 60 demonstrations planned at 38 locations between March and November. The team still plans to perform at an air show in Titusville, Fla., in late March, officials said.

The team was to appear Aug. 17-18 in Chicago, where the massive air show takes place along Lake Michigan. According to Ashworth, there remains a chance that the team still could appear.

"The guidance we have received as a service, as best we can, is that any actions that we take (due to sequestration) should be reversible. If sequestration were to end soon, there is the possibility that the Thunderbirds could return to flight."

Another one that Krauthammer brought up was the cancellation of White House tours. We recently gave $250 million in aid to Egypt -- 10% of that amount could fund White House tours for the next 25 years.

Something that bothers me is how people say things like "well that's only a couple bucks (or a drop in the bucket) so why bother getting rid of it.
In my opinion, if we can't afford it, you don't do it.
I know that a $4 coffee is only a couple bucks of my monthly budget, but if I lose my job, I stop buying $4 coffee.

Shouldn't the people purchasing tickets for white house tours be funding white house tours? They're not free, right?

If they are not making enough money, you raise the prices of tickets, or cancel the tour. It seems like a very simple solution.

You're not playing with other peoples money.

That's the difference. Households can't run the printing press or raise taxes or whatnot.

Why should the government be run any different? If there's not enough money you don't spend it. Now I get borrowing and bonds for roads and projects like I get borrowing for college or mortgages or emergencies like a new furnace so I'm not unrealistic but for shit like this... If there's no money for it don't do it.

I agree, Darkside.

It seems that everyone is in agreement, that cuts need to be made. But, as soon as cuts are made, the complaints start. Chas is complaining that a plant making weapons got shut down. Now, it's bad that we cut out flyovers? Cutting out non-essentials is exactly the place to start.

Yep, all money is going somewhere. Cutting anywhere in the budget is going to effect somebody. There's not anything you can do to stop that.

I'm about to make a complaint that sounds like I'm bitching about Obama but it's not him, it's everyone.
Dude has three caligraphers making $100k/yr each on staff. Really stupid. Again, just another drop in the bucket but isn't a full bucket full or small drops?

We could stop giving money/grants/loans to "Green Energy" companies that ultimately fail and then are bought up (with their U.S. taxpayer funded R&D etc) by the Chinese for pennies on the dollar.

Here's something else strange... maybe.

I did my Federal and State tax forms on the same day.

Got my state, but not my federal yet. First time the State EVER beat the Feds.

Almost everything in DC is free.

Museums, art galleries, trips to the Capitol and the Smithsonians.

I know Lipid said that people in his company would be effected (but not himself).

Well, I've got an easy solution to fix the funding problem.

Well, the current administration basically said life will end. They really rang the bells on the horrors of sequestor. And the market responds positively... and they take credit.

I was speaking more of people here.

The Market is its own entity. The Government should not take credit or blame for it.

Here, I only recall Lipid having concerns, not his department if I recall, but people he knows.

I've never taken the White House tour, but my guess is that it's free.

I saw a headline somewhere in the last 24 hours that said Trump offered to pay for the tours.
