It was the summer of 1988. I had a cheap ass "Phantom" guitar that was part of the Washburn brand. (sky point for Washburn in Mundelein!) Anyway, it was like a 18lb piece of gloss black wood that was sweet as hell. I would rock my yellow "dego-T" and Scott Ian inspired Anthrax Jam shorts and play the shit out of that thing. My buddy Josh was our drummer. He had a snare drum that wasn't his...my parents actually bought a snare drum for my Autistic brother James thinking that he would like the "tapping" aspect of his stim. He hated loud noises. So, Josh got the drum. I had a plastic Axion distortion pedal and a shiny blue vinyl Harmony 2x10 tall bass cabinet with a 30W head. our buddy Guy, that's his name...so, not only do I have a guy, I actually have a Guy...he played bass guitar. Except he couldn't really play bass guitar. He also kind of sang...but really just screamed his young adolescence for all to hear. I lived on the lake at 917 Fortress Drive, McHenry Il (google map it-street view it too). We actually lived in Fox Lake, but had a McHenry mailing address. We had a two story ranch with a boathouse and a shed. The shed had power and double overhead doors and was 3' feet away from the seawall on the lake.. We'd open the doors (since it was 95 outside) and jam. Me with my Washburn Phantom, Josh with his one snare drum, one drum stick, and a wooden spoon, and Guy with his black Sears bass and 8" plastic harmony guitar amp. WE WERE AWESOME. People would drop anchor and watch us play. It was our first show...and our first practice. I still have the casette tape. Our best song was called "You're Alive But Not For Long."
oh...and our band name was HAYDN....cause it was a street name a mile away in Johnsburg and it was kinda like Hades...and the devil. so, it was pretty cool for couple of soon to be 8th graders.

That story was awesome. I bet it was just as much fun writing that (and remembering it) as I had reading it. Sometimes you get those snap shots in your mind of when life was simpler and you get that moment of clarity.

I have a few of those snap shots in my mind... and most of them involved constructing rickety skateboard ramps and my Guardian skateboard with the "Minor Threat" stickers all over it.
