A man was taken into custody this evening after a three-hour barricade situation in Arlington Heights, according to witnesses and police.

About 5:20 p.m. police responded to a condominium development near Chestnut Avenue and Wing Street after a man "who was having a bad day" fired a gun into the air and then pointed it at his chest before returning to a residence, according to a witness at the scene.

Arlington Heights police along with officers from several local departments -- including a SWAT team -- responded, and at one point a woman who reportedly had been in the residence was released safely, witnesses said.

During the situation people were kept out of the line of fire, which also affected traffic around a nearby Jewel Food Store shopping area, witnesses said.

The man was considered armed and dangerous, but there were no reports of injury or a hostage situation, said one official on the scene who declined to be identified.

A little after 8 p.m. the man was reported in custody and the situation was winding down. Arlington Heights police and other officers on the scene did not immediately make a statement to the press.

Pretty scary, personally. My daughter lives real close to this area. Luckily, she was at some bar holding a drink in one hand and her Cubs floppy sun hat in another.

As a parent jimmy, I would be far more concerned that you raised a Cub fan.

The guy probably had just figured out he could not place on-line derby wagers and knew he did not have enough time to get over to the Arlington OTB. But he should have been glad.

And this explains why cops were racing down my residential street with lights and sirens around that time.
