In the UP I fished an area all the way east called Drummond Island it was good. As for Canada I would say I really enjoyed Mac's Eagle Lake. I wouldn't go where he went though I went to a place called Stanley's Resort same lake.

Some friends of mine did a fly-in way up in the Canadaian wilderness where a pilot dropped them off with their gear and a big block of ice and said see you next week.

I will look into Drummond.

Although I would really like to hit Canada, I think, with passports and crap, we'd probably try to stay in the Continental US.

Plus, I'm betting that a few of the hunters in our little faction would like to bring some Bear Protection, if you know what I mean (from what I've read, it looks pretty easy to get a temp license for that in MI).

Yeah Drummond was cool and not too populated Guns shouldn't be an issue.

Guns are a huge problem.
No handguns whatsoever.
Long guns can be brought in for hunting season in the fall with permits.

Jim Darosa hosts a radio show out of Joliet in the winter and guides for smallmouth on Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota in the summer.
Contact him through his website - http://www.fishsmallmouthbass.com/ and ask him for a recommendation on a place to stay.
The lake is great for pike, walleye and muskie but the smallies are the best you'll find anywhere.
Hire Jim to take you out for a day or two and then go it alone.
There are three main spots for monster smallmouth and you'll pick up the locations and methods in a day.
Four and five pound fish are the norm, not the exception.
Tell Jim that I told you to call.
He's a good guy.

I would take a look at Kentucky Lake as well as the Ozarks. Beautiful area and all the Bass Fishing you can handle.
Check it out.

Some of my friends go to Lac Seul in Ontario every other year.

It's been maybe 15 years since I've been here, but we did extended family trips here for years. They have an island with dozen or so cabins, main lodge, shower house. You boat in and then spend the week fishing. They have guides if you want them, but the times I was there my dad/grandfather/uncles had been there enough that we didn't use them, so don't know how they work.

Just thinking about those trips makes my mouth water for walleye shore lunch.

Eagle Lake is Ontario was bountiful the last time I went. Our cabin was actually on Eagle River but it's a short boat ride out to the main lake. We caught more Northern than anything else but there was a good number of Walleye, Sauger, Smallies, Crappies and Perch. No muskies despite the lake's reputation for them.

Q - rent a house from a private owner on the lake. There are tons of websites with pics and contact info. They are usually nicely furnished and reasonable when split among 5 people.

If you're even considering Canada, get your passports in order NOW.

Generally speaking, black bears won't fuck with you. But bring a pistol anyway.

He said he was looking to fish for Muskie and Northern and NOT interested in Bass fishing.

That being the case, I would suggest Hayward, Wisconsin. Several good lakes there for both Muskie (Muskie capital of the world) as well as Northern Pike. Lots of cabins for rent and Hayward also has some decent resturants.

And make sure whoever is driving when you get to the border, has a spotless driving/criminal record.

Doesn't matter who is driving a DUI on your record will not be allowed into Canada as it is a felony there.

That's not true. My friends go every other year, and one of them has had two DUIs.

He goes there every other year. He was driving one year, and the car was stopped and searched, but they were allowed to enter.

Yeah no big deal to me. Just would hate for someone to get up there and have trouble.
