I think he and Sergio should be required to be paired together in any tournament they both are in.

Good to see the last 2 major winners paired with a guy who hasn't won a major in ages

Can't wait, really looking forward to seeing the pros have to play a course that's short and tight with tons of OB trouble just a few feet off of several fairways.

Also looking forward to the short par 3 which will be at 92 yards one day.

92 yard shots are a bitch. I would rather have 120 or 130, and make a full swing with my 50 or 55.

Yup. For that type of shot I typically employ the bump n run unless I have to go up and over a trap or water.

I don't remember much about this course so really looking forward to seeing it and learning about it on
tv again. Then the countdown for next years U.S. Open up here next year begins. Next year will be a
good spectating year for me. Attending Masters and will likely do U.S. Open practice round.

Thanks for the correction. Not sure why I thought the Erin Hills U.S. Open was next year.
I need to get out there and play it again.

Tiger Woods: 9-2

Contenders
Adam Scott: 20-1
Rory McIlroy: 20-1
Matt Kuchar: 20-1
Phil Mickelson: 20-1

The "we don't know what to do with these guys" group
Graeme McDowell: 22-1
Justin Rose: 25-1

The sneaky good odds group
Brandt Snedeker: 28-1
Lee Westwood: 28-1
Charl Schwartzel: 28-1

Sergio and another guy
Luke Donald: 33-1
Sergio Garcia: 33-1
I've bolded the guys I like. As much as Kuchar plays, I think he finally takes a major this time round. Phil being in contention this weekend will likely help his concentration as well. I'll say Rory finishes 8th, Tiger finishes 5th with neither really being in strong contention on Sunday.

Betting on Sergio is throwing your money away. He just doesn't have it between the ears.

This might be one of the best US Opens we'll see in a long time.

Merion GC sets up to be a true shot-maker's course where length off the tee can both help and hurt players throughout the round. The course will come in at under 7,000 yards, making it the shortest major venue in a decade.

I heart driveable par-4 holes and sub-100 yard par-3's.

They have that, and a 628 yard par 5, and a 521 yard par 4.

A couple guys at work have played this course before and they said it was brutal despite being short. Very narrow and rough that you can lose a small child in.

Post subject:  Re: 2013 US Open at Merion

A very interesting read. Some of the hi-lites;
Quote:
• Four par-4s measure less than 360 yards. Guys like Dustin Johnson hit 330-yard drives these days, and complain that they hit it off the toe of the club.

• Merion's acreage is so tight, the driving range and player locker rooms are a mile away, at the West Course. For players who are used to complimentary deep-tissue massages in trailers near the first tee and caviar as an appetizer in the grill room adjacent to the 18th green, this will be a culture shock.

• Ambient noise from church bells will ring every half hour, and a train line nearby will rattle Merion with whistles. For players who give major championship scowls if a photographer passes gas during a pro-am, this will be a test of their high-strung nerves.

• The course measures only 6,996 yards. Last year's Olympic Club layout, at 7,100, was considered like a miniature golf course, so today's pros will be wondering if they're hitting from the ladies' tees.

• Heavy rain, a strong possibility during the week, could soften the greens so thoroughly, the players in the field may shout 'Target Practice!' before firing wedges at the wicker.

• Also, potential floods mean a doomsday scenario has the USGA prepared to play two holes from the West Course, a mile away, if needed. Can't you just hear Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller now, whispering into the microphones: "And now we'll see third-round leader Matt Kuchar sliding into the mini-van for his trip to play the 11th hole a mile away … he's asking that the radio be put on a "classic rock" station … his driver wants to hear "adult contemporary" and this could be a problem, Johnny…"

Well we are off and running today. No idea how the scoring will be. A lot of people think the scoring
will be historically low with a wet and short course. I would tend to agree but I heard this morning
that the rough was a bit longer than they had anticipated and due to the wet grounds they can't get
equipment out to cut it. Thick, long rough that is wet can be extremely penal. You can easily make
a big number just by missing the fairway here so I think that will help correct the scores some. I'll
be surprised if a score of -15 or better wins this tournament

I doubt we will see -15, but I can see the winning score being about -10 to -12, if the greens are wet.
