So today I'm a a no cooling call. It's a bad contactor. Essentially a relay that takes 24 volts from the thermostat and closes the two 120 volt contacts to the compressor and fan. there's earwigs or silverfish whatever you call them crawling around the contactor and a couple got into the contacts so when the coil was energized the contacts couldn't contact.
Happens all the time. Wait, let me Burn Stine that... HAPPENS. ALL. THE. TIME. (had three calls today were I replaced contactors).

So I tell the customer what I found. She says, "No." I'm like what do you mean, no? She says "we don't have bugs in McHenry like that."

Seriously?

I showed her the part. She asked me if I put the bugs in the contactor. I'm like yeah i carry them around and put them into random peoples homes and hope they call my company for repairs.

Had one a couple days ago, low on refrigerant. HAPPENS. ALL. THE. TIME. She said "my neighbor is stealing my refrigerant. i saw him outside with a propane tank."

Gave her the price. She is pissed. I say "R-22 has been phased out by the EPA and is getting more expensive every day."

Her answer to that? "FUCKING OBAMA!" I don't tell her that it was decided upon long before Obama left Kenya.
:(

What dumbass shit do your customers say?

Requires some pretty expensive equipment. And you have to be EPA licensed to buy it but it's probably profitable.

This will be right up your alley, Darko. Years ago, I was working for an HVAC company that did a lot of custom, residential jobs. I got to the house in the St. Charles in the morning. The driver was already there, so he and I carried the material into the basement, as my job was to run duct in the basement, so it could be finished. My boss still isn't there to give me the drawings, and explain what he wants me to do. The customer starts telling me what he and my boss had discussed previously. I politely tell him that I am waiting for my boss to show up, as he wanted things done very particularly. The customer continues to ramble on about my task at hand, using terminology that I don't understand. I don't remember all of it, probably because I was very confused, but one thing sticks out. He kept talking about a "collector bin". After talking with my boss, he was talking about the return trunk line. I'm supposed to know what a collector bin is, apparently.

You would probably notice somebody with a reclaimer hooked up to your condenser.

LOL. Nice. Never heard that one before. I just call them return drops or trunks.

Yeah. Kinda noisy. And time consuming.

I often get blamed for "acts of god"...like the 5" of rain in 3 hours in Lake Zurich this past Wednesday morning that put ground based electrical pedestals in 2' of water...

really angry homeowner building a $8M home who got 5" of water in a basement half gymnasium that is 18 feet below the elevation of the lake that surrounds his 3 acre peninsula:
"Don't you design for situations like this?"

me: "Like Noah's 2nd coming?"

The house is under construction...it's fkn ridiculous. If I've seen you recently, I've probably shown you pictures. The lake near this particular house in Wynstone was dry last year. Wednesday morning, it decided to rise 8" above it's predicted "100 year" level. The site is not finished graded yet. So, the sumps kept up just fine for the first hour or so, then the power went out....and the underdrains surround the foundation footing and attached to the sump pits added 5". It could have been a catastrophic event if the foundation had not been back-filled properly.

But, this dude will have a generator fueled by natural gas. He won't have to worry about power outages once the site is finished and the fkn generator is installed. No power outage...sumps keep pumping...no water in the basement.

The problem was the overflow weir for the lake downstream. It clearly failed...so, the water kept climbing until it went over the crown of the street. There are 42 lots in this subdivsion...at least two dozen had moderate to severe flooding. These people are not poor...
It's a big fkn deal...

You could have dropped a kayak in the rush of water in the ditch and had the ride of your life...until you drowned in the turbulence.

and the best part is...

it's not my problem.

How about when the customer wants to buy a second wand extension for their wet-dry vac cause they want to build a powered dustpan?

Customers often ask to speak to my manager. Apparently pants are a social norm in many parts of the country. Prudes.
