Post subject:  Auto Experts - Question about keys

So, I have a 2001 Acura TL and unfortunately fucked up and had my keys fall out of my pocket in a cab this weekend. Calling around but very little hope in recovering them.

The keys unfortunately have a chip/electronic in it, so I can't just get new ones cut. I'm currently using the valet key (can't lock my glovebox etc). I would like to have the valet key back to being an emergency key so I want to get two new keys and two new clickers. Is there a way I can do this without getting destroyed by a dealership?

If you can walk afterwards, then no you aren't getting destroyed.

I have no first hand knowledge, but a quick Google search seems to show it is possible. I'd call a locksmith company...see what they know.

Yea, reading the manual I guess the clicker had some kind of code or serial number. So it's possible for a locksmith/dealership to program copies keys and clickers for relatively cheap (~$80) if they have that. Ebay sold keys and clickers for cheap. But the not sure if they could program without having that master code/serial number. Woooo boy I outdid myself this weekend with this fuck up.

Also, I hate you. You've seen my car. It looks like an Accord. Except with for some reason fucking fancy keys.

Arlington Acura never picked up their phone. So fuck them.

Muller Acura quoted me $30 bucks for a key and $110 for a clicker which includes programming. I saw keys going for $10 on eBay and clickers going for $40ish. I don't know how to program that shit so went with dealership. Chalked it up as a dumbass tax and real tough lesson to learn. :|

my trucks key is metal but had that chip in it too. the rfid kind of chip, not the little resistor like gm did. i just ripped the module out of my key and taped it to my steering column. now i can cut as many keys i want for $5 a piece. the secret to security is to have something that looks like nobody wants.

yeah and 240k miles later, let me tell you somethin.... if i had to take a trip cross country and somebody offered me a brand new car to do it in, i would refuse. i have done all my own work on my truck, nearly everything underneath has been serviced or replaced except for the engine block itself. the body is rusting out and looking like shit, but it is the most reliable machine a man could ask for. first on race day bitches.

JERRY: Well, they're not here. You'll have to dig up your spare set.

GEORGE: I don't have a spare set. All my keys say 'do not duplicate'.

JERRY: So?

GEORGE: So you can't duplicate 'em.

(At this, Jerry and Kramer exchange a look, and laugh.)

KRAMER: Sure you can. (to Jerry) Such a sweet kid.

I'm giving you a hard time. Everyone knows TLs were only good during the third generation.

Yea, lost my apartment keys too. But those luckily don't have fucking chips in them.

If it makes you feel better I think you did the right thing. My son bought a cheap clicker off amazon and while it didn't cost much it is junk. You have to be literally on top of the car before it will work and even then it is spotty.

I much prefer a clicker that works 100 yards out so I can find my car in a parking lot.
