A suburban school district is building a 5K race next month around one of the Chicago area's most well-known ghost stories: Resurrection Mary. Legend has it that a young blonde in a white party dress was killed on Archer Avenue in the 1930s by a hit-and-run driver. Since then, her ghost allegedly has been spotted hitchhiking on the busy street. When she reaches Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, she vanishes, or so the story goes. Indian Springs School District 109 in Justice decided to embrace the popular tale this year for its fundraiser 5K, which was previously called the Resurrection Run. Now in its second year, the event raises money for college scholarships for students who have graduated from the district. "Right now, there are so many different 5Ks out there that have different themes," said Angie Krejci, assistant principal at Brodnicki School, who is helping to organize the race. "We thought we'd key on (Resurrection Mary) to make this race pretty popular." On the 3.1-mile route, participants will run through the southwest suburban village and on Archer Avenue, the scene of Resurrection Mary's reported sightings. The event will feature people dressed up as Resurrection Mary, and a life-size cutout of the ghost will be available for photos. Runners are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costumes. The race, which is also sponsored by the village of Justice, begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 20. To register, visit resurrectionmary5k.com. |

Have you guys ever seen those 26.2 stickers people put on their cars to brag that they ran a marathon? I saw one the other day for someone who ran a 5K (so it was 3.1). Is that really something to brag about? I'm very out of shape, but even I could gut it out through a 5K. Take that damn shit off your car. |

I so want to believe this, but are you sure it wasn't 13.1 for a half-marathon? I see those all the time. |

I checked online, and the stickers/magnets do exist. |

I would like to design and sell one that says .08, but I thought that might make me a target by the police. |

Are those people mocking 5K people because they care so little about the achievement that they chose not to finish the race even with the finish line in view? |
