Seems like Salinger'ss name has been in the news a little bit lately ( he not only supported child rape, seems he dabbled in it ). Having read Catcher years back, I wasnt impressed with it thenand having re read it recently, I still dont see what the fuss is about. Am I missing something ? had to have been a certain age when it first came out to appreciate it? overrated schlock ? just dont "get it" ( like Leery's women or Bob Dylans music?) |

That you don't "get" Dylan would seem to be the buried lede of this thread. Anyway, I feel like I've articulated my stance on Catcher here before, which is that as great as it is, it may start becoming dated to new generations of readers as the time period it's in fades further and further into the horizon. Not that I'm suggesting the crimes they've perpetrated on Judy Blume books, where they rewrite them to include iPods and skyping or whatever, but it could just be that it's not going to be a holy grail of disaffected white male adolescence like it used to be. The Perks of Being a Wallflower seems to be creeping into this role, for better or worse. |

Nothing. It's a book, and all books suck. |

There are certain threads at times where I am no idea what is going on, this would be one of those. |

And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it. |

I read Salinger's Nine Short Stories in June. The Glass family is far more interesting than Holden Caulfield. |

I liked much of Dylan's stuff up to and including "Jokerman" -- but haven't had much interest since. |

We touched on this in a thread last year, thats what I dont get. Im mystified as to why he's considered a genius. Everyone has an opinion on this and it would be easy to try to copy and paste some wordy answer that a music exec, biographer or critic has spewed out over the years. I think the fact that everyone has a slightly different opinion about the guy shows just how dynamic he really has been over the past 50 years he has been recording music. Over the years he has slipped between folk, rock, christian, and multiple forms of country music, making a signifcant mark in each genre. Sure the guys voice is pretty awful now and likely has been for a number of years, save some of his studio work. His voice has never been what all the people came for though. The lyrics has always been what makes Dylan's music great. He did more for songwriting than any other 20th century artist. His use of abstract imagery was something totally off the wall back in the day. It didn't matter if the lyrics didn't make sense on the surface, he asked the listener to think for themselves and decipher what he was trying to say. He has only won 10 Grammys over the years, so he is far from a prolific seller of albums and Mr. Popular. I think it would be hard to imagine another artist in our lifetime also picking up an Academy Award, Peoples Choice award, Pulitzer Prize and Presidential Medal of Freedom though. Genius is a pretty heady term to toss around but he should definitely be included when discussing the Mount Rushmore of songwriting. During his early days he gave away more big hits to other artists than most bands would ever have in a career. |

Bob Dylan was a god and hero to his audience, then he decided he wanted to try something new, his fans revolted, he told them to go get proper fucked. He was above average as a songwriter. As a musician I shit better than most of his efforts. I can get a stroke victim to play better harmonica than he does. He's not in the absolute rarefied air of the greats, but he's like in the top 5 right after that. He's the flipside of the same coin the Neil Young is on. Most people either like one or both of these fellas when they're young then move on, or they wait until about age 30 and learn to enjoy them properly for what they are kinda like when you finally one day realize that dipping the corner of your piece of toast in runny eggs is really just fucking terrific and not something gross "old" people like to do. |
