Post subject:  Selling a vehicle question

A girl came up to me asked this, earlier in the year, she sold a vehicle to some people, knew them real well, so not much paperwork. Doesn't see them much anymore.

I don't know if this is for taxes or insurance, but needs something notarized, to prove she didn't get too much money for it and since she doesn't see them is there anything she can do to basically get a statement?

The reason I think its more for insurance, she brought up how her grandson is insured through the state and wonder if she has to prove she doesn't make too much to help get assistance, but needs to do this by this week, so it could be a tax thing, heard on the news about people that needed extensions it was the 6 month time frame.

Basically anyway to get the paperwork if can't see these people.

Any help would be appreciated.

A copy of the bill of sale, which states who bought the car from whom and for how much in what condition with date of sale.

Just accept interesting trades, and leave the money out of it.

dont you just write in the price of sale on the title when you sign it over? and always put $1 in there so insurance wont jack you

Thanks for the info, talked to her today, sounds like they gave her money, she gave them the title and that was it.

This is all based on Indiana laws so who knows with IL but I'm sure it's similar.

Most person to person sales didnt require a bill of sale. There is a spot on the title that you can put the amount sold. A lot of people would leave it blank and the purchaser would fill it out themselves. You have to pay sales tax on whatever the amount was so a lot of people would write 'gift' or $1.00.

I believe you can get a title history from the BMV but I'm not certain if it would show selling price on it. If it gives you a copy of the acutal microfilmed title then you should be able to see what was put on there, if it just shows a list of owners and dates then you are probably out of luck. Worth a shot I suppose.

That's not why people used to do that.
